I am linking up again with The Pleated Poppy for What I Wore Wednesday. Im looking more and more pregnant, which means more people stop and ask about the pregnancy. I welcome the chance to talk about being pregnant since I had very few people ask when I was pregnant with Jack. I like sharing my news. 

I busted out the maternity jeans last week, thinking it was time, but they just fell off of me. I guess I need to get a belly band for this transitional period. I can still button up my normal jeans, but its getting to be too uncomfortable. This post covers a 2-week period from Christmas Eve to the week of New Years.

Christmas Eve.

This was the first time I saw a picture of myself and thought, "Oh my word, Im huge!"

Today is 7 years since I lost Solomon. I cannot believe it. I woke up this morning and hugged Adam as tightly as I could. I gave Alison extra kisses goodbye at the bus stop.

I have the 7-year itch. I will always have a dormant longing for Solomon. I long to know so much. Would his eyes have been blue like my daughters or brown like my sons? Would the weight of his body as he was nursing felt skinny like Adam or bulky like Alison? Would he have walked late, talked early, liked peas or apples. Things I will never know in this lifetime.

Today is the only day each year I allow myself to ask "why?" Why did this happen to me? I dont wallow anymore...the "why" is more of a curiousity in my life, a question that will never be answered. And even if it was, what difference would it make? Solomon is the emptiness in my heart that will always be there.

Today is the day my husband forbids me to mention. Maybe not forbids, but he has let me know in no uncertain terms, not to bring it up.

Today is the day that my first child was supposed to be born. Based on my recording keeping and the calculated dates of ovulation, conception and sonogram-dating, every date came to the conclusion July 28th was the BIG DAY. Eric feels theres no point recalling this day, since we dont recall the due dates of Alison and Adam. I of course argue his point. We do mention Alisons due date because it was my mothers birthday and theres not much to say about Adams since it was pretty much on his birthday. His dates were always off but I firmly believe he was due March 29 but I couldnt have a scheduled C on Saturday so Friday March 28th it was.

When July 28, 2000 came, I was in a hotel in Washington DC, fantasizing Room Service would deliver a baby to me, sobbing in Erics arms, and listening to the very last broadcast of Regis and KathyLee - a program I had never watched. It was a horrible day for me and thinking back I can remember the rawness I felt, as if someone stripped by skin and I was just a bunch of bones with a broken heart.

Today in 2007, Im not much happier. Oh there have been joyous times, and there will continue to be. But I am still deeply saddened by my grandmothers death on July 4th and Im feeling a lot of that rawness today. At least I have my children, whove been extremely tolerant of their moody mommy.

I just realized it is Ash Wednesday, not a holiday of significance for me but it is the day I delivered Solomon. March 8, 2000 was also Ash Wednesday. When I delivered him, only Eric and my doctor were in the room with me. When all was done, I remember my nurse returning, she had gone to church on her lunch break. Its curious what gets remembered and when.

Always a tough day for me. It is Rebeccas birthday. At the time I was supposed to celebrating the joy of having my first child while my best friend enjoyed the birth of hers.

Solomon and Rebecca were due within days of each other. I was so raw when Jon called to say she had been born and that mother and baby were doing well. Not the mother and baby I knew, not me, not Solomon. I couldnt get out of bed and hoped to be forgiven for being such a rotten friend.

We finally got a good snow this year – about 8" to be exact. The good thing about living where we live is that the snow is pretty, we can enjoy for a day or two, and then it disappears. Im pretty sure the weather reports are calling for temps in the mid 50s next week.

The bad part about living where we live is that the roads dont always get treated in time. We live on top of a mountain and there are 3 main roads that access the top. Two of which regularly get shut down. 

Last night, Daniel left work in an effort to get home before dark, but he got caught on the main road at the front of the mountain. There was an accident at the top and what normally is a 6-10 minute drive up ended up taking 30+minutes. 

Thankfully he was in the first group of people trying to get up because we read reports that people were stuck for more than 3 hours and many eventually had to abandon their cars and walk up.

Im not going to lie, I have been having a lot of Braxton Hicks contractions this week and the whole idea that all 3 roads on and off the mountain were closed made me a bit nervous. Daniel said that if we had to, he would get us off the mountain. Hopefully this is the end of our winter weather for the year.

After supper, we made our traditional snow cream. Daniel grew up making snow cream and we have done our best to make it when we get a good snow. Its a nice tradition that I am glad we can share with Jack. What kid doesnt like the sugary goodness of a sweet treat that you can only have when it snows? This is Jacks second time to have it.

This morning we woke up and had about 8" of fluffy snow on the ground. I made chocolate chip banana muffins while my guys slept in. After breakfast, we headed out to have some fun in the snow.

On Signal Mountain, where we live, it is a tradition to head out to the golf course for sledding. We did this last year, but this year didnt feel like making the effort. I have no doubt that we have many years ahead to make it over to sled on the golf course.

This year we enjoyed pulling Jack around our neighborhood on a sled, then we had a snowball fight, made snow angels and built a snowman at the park across the street from our house.

Not a bad way to spend a morning together.

Sometimes life is just strange and I find myself giving my head a whack with the back of my hand.

Alison asked about Solomon.  Alison asks a lot of questions and she is not the type of child who is easily pacified.  I often have to ask her to ask me the question again in a few days, when I have had time to think of and formulate a solid answer for her.

She asked how Solomon died.  How do you explain pPROM to a ten-year old?  Somehow I managed an answer.  She knew that when a baby is in a moms tummy, the baby is swimming in water.  I told her this was special fluid that helps the baby breath, like a fish.  I explained how my water came out.  She asked if this is what it means when the water breaks so I know she understands a little of the mechanics.

I told her usually the water breaks when a mommy is 9 months pregnant and the baby is ready to be born.  But in my case, the water came out at 5 months.  And because the water helped Solomon breath and grow, and the water was gone, he died.

She got it.  She totatly seemed to understand, and went on to resume playing.  Go figure.

It is now 8:51pm and I am waiting to exhale. This is always the worst day for me, every year. It is easier, Ill grant you that, than last year and last year was easier than the one before. But I can feel the stress of the day in my body, the tension upon awakening knowing this is "that day."

Solomon would be 9 today if he had lived. And if he had lived, I wonder how he would be. I get so emotional when I see special needs kids, and thank God every day for the normalness my children exhibit.

Today is the only day of the year I give myself permission to ask the whys? Why did this happen to me? Why did this happen to him? Why did this happen to us?

What did I do to deserve this? Technically, not a why question, but something wondered always in the recesses of my mind, my only answer being so I would know what real stress and heartache are, as opposed to the daily stresses and heartaches of every day life.

I just dont think thats a good enough answer.

Last night I went to "my writers group" at the library. It was actually one of the few times in this group that I didnt write about Solomon or loss, pain, heartache and sadness. The instructor is a local author, poet and published novelist, and she is great: Barbara Novack. She is very positive and encouraging.

Erica Jong is quoted as saying something like "writing is the balm of grief." And so it is.

We, along with a good portion of the south, got a dose of frigid weather last week and snow again today. As a reminder not to complain too much, I only have to look as far as Facebook and my relatives in Canada who have had -40º Celsius temps! 

 2/18/15

Its hard to complain about temps in the teens when I know people who are dealing with much, much colder temps. And while Niagara Falls has not completely frozen over, I have seen photo evidence from extended family of the partially frozen falls.

In our little corner of the south, schools were closed all of last week, but thankfully the Y was still open and we were able to go to town several times to expend some energy. 

   2/21/15

While it was chilly, we didnt get much snow. Friday night we finally got a couple of inches, but by morning it was covered in a layer of ice. That didnt stop Daniel from taking Jack out on the sled. 

Then this morning we woke up to about an inch on the ground with more expected tomorrow. Compared to other places, it isnt much but in the south it keeps us inside. We have baked and made forts and watched countless movies.

On Saturday, the road in front of our house was a sheet of ice, but actually quite good for pulling a Jack around on the sled (last February we had a snow of 8 inches and it was fun to out on the golf course to sled). 

Daniel and Jack stayed outside until the snow turned to sleet/rain. After taking some photos of them, I took my pregnant self inside and enjoyed our warm fireplace.

2/24/15

I am so grateful that we have a wood stove. It has made a huge difference in keeping our house warm during these cold weeks. It looks like this will be another cold week, but hopefully winter is wrapping up and we will see warmer temperatures soon.

Today is Ash Wednesday. Not a holiday for me. I meant to post yesterday on Mardi Gras. Thats not a holiday for me either.

What I note about both days is that in 2000, Mardi Gras and Ash Wednesday were March 7 and 8. I delivered Solomon on March 8.

On Mardi Gras, I started the day fantasizing that the doctors were wrong, my dates were wrong and that all the wrongs would make one big right, and I wouldnt be losing my baby. On Ash Wednesday the biggest wrong, me, occurred.

Whenever I see a person with ashes on their forehead, two things come to mind. First is my friend Terry, who always left work at lunchtime, went to the closest Church and returned to the office ashened. The second is losing Solomon. The nurse attending to me had gone on this errand, and sure enough I delivered my baby without her. In the end, it doesnt really matter, she would not have been able to save my child. When she returned and learned I was done, she apologized and helped to clean me up. Those are my Ash Wednesday memories.
