pregnancy weight loss calculator | How to Get in Shape 5 Step Plan

pregnancy weight loss calculator

Ive been ruminating on this post for awhile.  Now that I have the experience of training for and competing in an NPC bikini contest behind me, Ive been on my own to try to maintain the body I built in those six months.  I made significant progress, going from about 25% body fat and 115 pounds to probably 15% body fat (Im not 100% sure on that number because we stopped measuring at 17 or 19%.  I was supposed to get my body fat tested at the Bod Pod, but they cancelled because the machine wasnt working), and I competed at 100 pounds.

Although I wasnt grossly out of shape at the beginning of my competition prep, I was surprised at just how hard I had to work and for how long.  The changes dont come easy, but they do come.  You can count on that if youre doing the exercise and eating properly.  So, Ive been reflecting on exactly HOW I made those changes and how I stuck to it for so long and I realized five key things about how to get in shape.

1.  Decide that you are going to make a change.  First and foremost, you have to commit to not only wanting to make a change, but that you are actually going to make that change.  For me, a big motivator was knowing I did not want to end up in July 2014, where I was in July 2013.  I wanted to be in great shape and not feeling bad about myself.  So, the new year of 2014 marked the beginning of implementing those changes.  I knew if I started in January, Id have significant results by July.  If you set a goal (a family or high school reunion, a birthday, anniversary, vacation, or bikini contest) and back the time out so you can work towards it, keeping that goal in mind will help keep you committed and focused.  Our minds and spirit are very powerful.  When my body would tell me it didnt want to work out or eat another piece of fish, I just treated it like a child that doesnt get to tell me what to do. It didnt know best since I had already decided months ago what I wanted to achieve. Instead, I did what I knew I needed to do to get me to the goal I set.  In those "weak" moments, listen to your "higher self", the one that already made the decision to get in shape and create a new life.

2.  Fit your day around your workout instead of trying to fit your workout into your day.   The last couple of weeks I have fallen off of the workout train and I just couldnt seem to get it to fit into my day.  Im home with my son for the summer and I wanted to spend those days with him, so hes not going to camp.  I used to workout first thing in the morning, but now, our mornings are lazy, and were chilling out in pjs watching cartoons (him) and drinking coffee (me) well past 10:00 a.m.  And then I need to be fueled up for a strong workout, so I figure, we need to wait until after lunch to head to the gym.  But, after lunch finds us heading to swim class or running errands or just not feeling like breaking up the day with a workout, so I tell myself, "Ill go when my husband gets home." But, then its time to make dinner and eat, and then get my son ready for bed and it gets late, so I say, "Ill just go tomorrow. . . . "  Sound familiar??

If you continue like that, youll never make it to the gym, or you will, but your efforts will be sporadic and you wont get the results you want.  You must decide in advance when you will workout (whether its at 5:30 a.m. to Insanity home videos like my friend Angela) or at lunch, or after work, or after the kids are in bed.  Then, you decide how to fit your day around your workout.  Yes, it requires planning.   Yes, some other things you might have to say no to.  But, once you get into your routine, it just becomes part of your day.  I did best to actually schedule my entire day on paper so I could visually see how my day would fit around my workout and meal plan since I ate five meals a day.  The RED indicates cardio and training sessions and the pencil circle marks indicate when I needed to eat.  I had to prep meals in advance and often eat in the car or at my sons swim lessons, etc.

3.  Consider hiring a trainer or finding a workout partner.  A trainer isnt absolutely necessary, but if you need that person to keep you accountable to your workouts, its worth it.  You could have a friend as your accountability partner, just make sure she is reliable and wont flake on you.  You need someone tough who will keep their appointments and also, not just chat with you during the workout.  You should be making the most of your time in the gym,  working those muscles, huffing and puffing, and sweating!

If you arent familiar with the machines, or a beginner when it comes to lifting weights, it is a good idea to use an experienced trainer so you dont get hurt.  Ive had good and not-so-good trainers in the past, but John Sherman and Monica Isles were the best.  I saw the best results with John though, because I worked out more often with him and because I followed his meal plan.  Which leads me to the next point.

4.  Working out consistently will cause you to eat better.  Working out will only get you so far in changing your physique.  You have to eat better too.  Something about having physically worked out so hard and sweating and hurting will make you say, "That piece of cake or pizza just isnt worth it."  You start to understand how eating those extra calories and fat will translate into that much more work to get it off and you dont want it!  That is why I kept finding myself saying, "The diet isnt that hard."  Or at least not as hard as I thought it would be.  Youll look forward to (and enjoy more) the "cheat" meals on the weekend.  You can go HERE to see my bikini contest meal plan.

5.  Once you start, small changes will keep you motivated, just stick with it!  My trainer casually remarked to me when we first started working out together, "Youre gonna like your body way before the competition."  I didnt give it too much thought at the time, but man was he right!  Although, it took a long time to get to "bikini contest" ready, I felt great in my skin long before that.  Your clothes will start fitting better, your face will change, you skin will be brighter, your energy will be higher, you will have more confidence and inner strength and that feels so good.  I started noticing changes in my body within just two weeks of working out and eating better, but the changes kept coming as long as I stuck with it.   In time, you WILL reach your goal.

If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments and I may use them in a future post.  Have a great weekend!

extreme weight loss during pregnancy | October 10 Reunion Group

extreme weight loss during pregnancy

I attended a Reunion Group this week and saw Patty, Janine T, Bill and Diana and Rosemary and her husband. We were the reunion-ers. In the loss group were several couples, one couple in particular who were there for a repeat. Their second pregnancy ended in loss recently. I remmebered them immediately from the first time I spoke at their group. Talk about UNFAIRNESS.

I sat and listened to the loss group members relay their experiences, and went through my part with my usual shaking and nerous voice. It is still painful to talk about, even at 7+ years. I wonder what the next 7 will be like.

weight loss during pregnancy forum | The day my husband forbids me to mention

weight loss during pregnancy forum

Today is the day my husband forbids me to mention. Maybe not forbids, but he has let me know in no uncertain terms, not to bring it up.

Today is the day that my first child was supposed to be born. Based on my recording keeping and the calculated dates of ovulation, conception and sonogram-dating, every date came to the conclusion July 28th was the BIG DAY. Eric feels theres no point recalling this day, since we dont recall the due dates of Alison and Adam. I of course argue his point. We do mention Alisons due date because it was my mothers birthday and theres not much to say about Adams since it was pretty much on his birthday. His dates were always off but I firmly believe he was due March 29 but I couldnt have a scheduled C on Saturday so Friday March 28th it was.

When July 28, 2000 came, I was in a hotel in Washington DC, fantasizing Room Service would deliver a baby to me, sobbing in Erics arms, and listening to the very last broadcast of Regis and KathyLee - a program I had never watched. It was a horrible day for me and thinking back I can remember the rawness I felt, as if someone stripped by skin and I was just a bunch of bones with a broken heart.

Today in 2007, Im not much happier. Oh there have been joyous times, and there will continue to be. But I am still deeply saddened by my grandmothers death on July 4th and Im feeling a lot of that rawness today. At least I have my children, whove been extremely tolerant of their moody mommy.

baby weight loss 8 months | The Camp House

baby weight loss 8 months

When I first became a mom, four-and-a-half years ago, I had a difficult time letting go of the me before kids. I cant be certain, but perhaps it was hard to make the adjustment because I had spent my ENTIRE adult life (almost 10 years!) filling roles that did not include motherhood.

Thankfully my life circumstances at the time allowed me to continue working part-time as a graphic designer and I have been able to spend the last 5 years wearing multiple hats.

One of the biggest blessings of continuing part-time with my career, besides keeping a foot in the door and my skills up-to-date, is that I made a friend who understands the me who works. This has been helpful in so many ways since I no longer go to an office where I would be surrounded by peers.

We actually met through Craigslist, when I was first just starting up freelancing in the Chattanooga area, and we have been colleagues and friends ever since.

Initially 98% of our interaction was through email, but in recent years we have made an effort to get together several times a year for coffee or breakfast. We talk shop. We talk motherhood. We talk about life in general. We discuss current projects, client frustrations, new software, and she doesnt mind if I bring a baby along (Im pretty sure Jack tagged along as a newborn when she first interviewed me!).

Im so grateful that I live in a time that I can work remotely, and that I have peers who understand why I choose to freelance as well as the frustrations (and benefits) of working from home.

Today we met at The Camp House in downtown Chattanooga for breakfast. The place was hopping. I had a latte with my scrambled eggs, bacon, and potatoes with cheese. The food was simple but incredibly delicious. You know I love breakfast, and this place hit the spot. With lots of couches and big tables, The Camp House is a great place for a meeting or to work remotely (though maybe on a quieter day, today was super loud). They also have a huge outdoor area for warmer days.

The Camp House is a unique venue in that while it serves as a cafe during the day, and music venue in the evening, it is also a church on Sunday – a part of The Mission Chattanooga Community that meets in three distinct venues throughout the city of Chattanooga. If you havent had a chance to check out The Camp House, you really should.

baby weight loss in first month | The Walk to Remember

baby weight loss in first month

October 6th was The Walk to Remember. As strange as this may sound, it was truly wonderful to be there and not be a speaker. Its not that I dont want to talk, anyone who knows me knows I have a hard time shutting up. It was more of a relief to have the role of just a mourner among all the others. And there were others....so may newbies. Thats what incites my anger now, that more and more women and men and families are experience pregnancy loss.

I was angry with myself for such a long time for taking Solomon from me and did let go of the anger eventually. It took years but I eventually forgave myself too. But the naive part of me still wants no more pregnancies to have unhappy outcomes. I know my thoughts are unreasonable, I just cant help them.

pregnancy weight loss plateau | 5 Month Post Bikini Contest Check In

pregnancy weight loss plateau

It's been a little more than five months since I competed in my first NPC bikini competition and I wanted to share what life's been like since then and where I am now with my (lifelong) fitness journey.  I say lifelong journey because as long as I'm alive, I want to take care of myself and never take my health for granted.  With my Dad's illness, I've painfully watched his physical ability diminish to the point where he cannot walk, so I'm always mindful of how grateful I am to be able to move and exercise.

the beginning

Almost one year ago, I had gotten out of shape and was ready for a big change.  I couldn't fit comfortably into my clothes, felt sluggish and missed feeling good about myself.  I started working out and eating better in February 2014 on my own, and began working with my trainer (3-4 days a week) at the end of March 2014.  We trained together for 15 weeks and I competed in the bikini contest on July 4, 2014.  I went from 112 pounds and 25% body fat (Feb 2014) to 100 pounds (July 2014).  We didn't test my contest body fat because I was supposed to go the BodPod for a very accurate reading, but the facility cancelled my appointment because they machine wasn't working.  My trainer guesstimated I competed at about 15% body fat.

pregnancy weight loss celebrity | Operation Get Lean Week 5 Recap

pregnancy weight loss celebrity

One more week will be 6 weeks of clean eating and training 5 days a week (heavy weights) and at least 4 days of cardio (20 minutes).  Im confident that you can make BIG progress and changes to your body and health in that relatively short amount of time.  I have "only" dropped about 3 pound (112 to 109), but I have gained muscle, which is my goal anyway.  I havent tested my body fat, so Im not really sure about the number, however, my jeans fit perfectly again so I know Im making progress (they were getting difficult to button!).

I post progress pictures on my Instagram (@honeywerehome) and use #honeywerehealthy if you want to follow along.

THE WORKOUTS

5 minute treadmill warmup (speed at 4.0), then go directly to planks.  I really dont do any other abdominal exercises, but my stomach is definitely getting leaner and more toned.

Monday - Shoulders, 3 planks (2 1/2 min each), Cardio- 20 minute treadmill sprints at 7.5 mph

Tuesday - Off (my sons birthday!)

Wednesday - Back, 2 planks (2 1/2 min each), Cardio- 20 minutes on stair mill at Level 60

Thursday - Biceps/Triceps, 3 planks (3 min, 3 min!!, 2 1/2 min)  Cardio- 20 minute treadmill sprints at 7.5 mph

Friday - Legs, Cardio- 20 minutes on stair mill at Level 60

Saturday - Off

Sunday - Off

You can see my BACK WORKOUT HERE and my SHOULDER WORKOUT HERE.

THE MEALS

Im still on THIS MEAL PLAN.  I am not hungry and my energy levels stay constant throughout the day.  Im not normally very good about eating vegetables, but have had them consistently for the last two weeks.  It feels good knowing Im fueling my body with whole, non-processed food.

7:00 a.m.  oatmeal, coffee with creamer

9:30 a.m.  protein shake (lately 1 scoop of protein powder with 8 oz 1% milk)

11:00 p.m.  lean protein and veggies

3:00 p.m.  lean protein and veggies or greek yogurt

6:00 p.m. lean protein and veggies

8:30-9  egg white omelet or greek yogurt

I snacked on cashews and celery with natural peanut butter.

For Greek yogurt, I mix about 1/2 cup of Fage Total 0% with Stonyfield Caramel.  I love the caramel flavor but its a little sweet on its own, plus the nutrition on the Fage is great.

I just started eating egg whites and cooked a dozen in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes- perfect!  Im aiming to eat 4 a day.

For something new with my veggies, I improvised a "confetti salad" to pair with my protein, but then I found I like to just mix it all together.  The salad is a combination of the following ingredients:

  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Edamame (steamed)
  • Corn (steamed)
  • Sliced Olives
  • Red Onion
  • Feta
  • Olive Oil
  • Lemon Juice
I just diced up the tomatoes, cucumber and onion and combined it with steamed edamame and corn (off the cob), added the feta, olive oil and lemon juice.

I often eat at least one meal per day in the car- usually the 3:00 meal when Im in the carpool line picking up my son from school, so lumping it all in together works perfectly.

"Cheat" meals this week included:

Monday- dark chocolate owl (melted chocolate poured into a mold) and dipped in a tablespoon of natural peanut butter

Wednesday- tasting menu at a restaurant with my friend (tiny portions though and skipping dessert) with about 2 glasses of wine.

Thursday- a piece of lasagna and angle food cake (I made this meal for new parents to a beautiful baby girl and ate with them at the hospital) and 1 Ghiradehli carmel chocolate.

Friday- Starbucks iced tall 2-pump mocha, no whip (2 pumps is one less pump of chocolate than they normally put, I just like it better that way).

Saturday- mimosa at brunch

weight loss during pregnancy in hindi | The Big 5!!!!!

weight loss during pregnancy in hindi

I cannot believe it... today is Alisons 5th birthday. I recall exactly at this time five years ago I was packing my belongings and crying. Alisons birth would be the culmination of a 17 month journey from the loss of Solomon. Her birth day I thought would never arrive.

As Eric and I drove to the hospital I was crying, complaining that this would be just another trip to the hospital for nothing. I cried through my labor, waiting. And when I heard the cry of Alison for the first time, tears rolled from my eyes, horizontally across my cheeks, into my ears.

All the waiting for my moment of joy. Her cry was the sweetest sound I had ever heard.

Today she is 5, how is that possible? She is growing up fast and starts Kindergarten and Daisy Scouts in a few weeks.

My praying and perseverance paid off in the wonder of her.

baby weight loss newborn | Baby 2 Our Favorite Baby Products 5 9 Months

baby weight loss newborn

When it comes to baby products we love for our second child, the long and short of it is, pretty much everything we used for Jack we basically use for Isaac.

So the good news is, if you are expecting baby #2, you already have all of the gear you need (and you have probably figured out the stuff you didnt really need in the first place). Since we have two boys, this philosophy extends to clothes too. Isaac gets mostly hand-me-downs, but really if your stuff is still in good shape, there is no reason to get something new. You can read my 0-4 month product recap here.

During the 5-9 month range, here are the products we still love, even four years later:

IKEA SUNDVIK crib – yep still using. At 4 months old, we moved Isaac from our Rock N Play in our room to Jacks old crib in the nursery upstairs. Our IKEA crib has served us well and I still love that it meets our criteria for form and function. We still havent really decorated a nursery, but one of these days...

AngelCare Movement and Sound Monitor – check. When we moved Isaac upstairs, we started using Isaacs old baby monitor again. The biggest negative is that the battery doesnt hold a charge very well any more. So it mostly has to sit in its cradle at this point. But it still works.

Fisher Price Space Saver High Chair – still useful. I wrote about this in my 0-4 month post but really it has become even more useful as Isaac is now eating every meal with us at the table.

Recaro ProRide Carseat – thank goodness we already had this. We had to upgrade Isaac to Jacks old convertible carseat at 5 months (he was too big for his baby carrier). With baby number two, it is much easier to move through each new stage because we have already done the research and purchased the products and we know we like them.

Graco Pack N Play – continues to come in handy for traveling once Isaac outgrew the Rock N Play.

Baby Einstein Musical Motion Activity Jumper – a fave. This has become a huge hit with Isaac in the last 3 months. It is about the only thing that allows me to get supper ready and on the table.

Cloth Diapers – four years later we are still using our original cloth diapers about 80% of the time. We have had to get rid of some of the originals and buy some new ones, but we continue to be fans of cloth diapers.

The best part of our current stage is that Isaac has finally discovered a love for toys, and we already have lots of them in stock.

One thing I want to get better at doing with Isaac is reading more regularly, one on one (we already have a ton of books). We always read to our boys at bedtime, but I find that I dont read as often to Isaac as I did Jack. Isaac loves our bedtime story routine, but he is also in a phase where he mostly wants to chew on the books.

One item that we now own that we didnt when Jack was a baby is our Thule Chariot Chariot 1 bike trailer. We have taken Isaac on several bike rides in it and he loves it!

Kelty Messenger Diaper Bag – has been retired (its in the closet as a back up). This time around I decided to use a striped bag from Target that I love. I get so many compliments on it and I like that I dont look like Im hauling around a diaper bag (plus I love stripes!).

Things we are not really using this time:
Pacifiers – Isaac has no interest.
Bibs – Isaac somehow stays much cleaner than Jack ever did.
Baby Bjorn carrier – we went with an Ergo carrier this time (though Isaac is now too big to be carried on my chest, he can still ride on my back).
Neat Solutions disposable placemats – we have talked about getting these again, but really arent super paranoid this go round).
Safety 1st Fever Light Ear Thermometer – we ended up purchasing a Braun Thermoscan Ear Thermometer (now discontinued) instead.

That wraps it up for the edition of products we like (and are still using).

A Look Back at products we used the most when Jack was a baby:
0-3 months  |  3-6 months  |  6-9 months  |  9-12 months
