pregnancy losing weight second trimester | Chats with Jack

pregnancy losing weight second trimester

Its been awhile since I have had the time to post a "Chat with Jack" and it isnt because we have been lacking in interesting conversations... Life with a newborn doesnt leave a lot of time for blogging! These are the types of things Jack tells us out of the blue...

At bedtime, putting on jammies, Jack points to his nipples and says, What are these, mommy?
Me: Its your chest.
J: No, what are these? [again pointing to nipples]
Me: They are called nipples.
J: Do you have them? I want to see.
Me: Um, yes I have them and no you cant see them.

Do you trust me? [not sure where he heard this]

Why did God make it dark sometimes and sunny sometimes?

Watch me! or Look at me! [over and over ad nauseam]

Failing to adequately explain why the flowers come out in spring, I told Jack he would have to ask God...
J: Where is God?
Me: In Heaven
J: But where is Gods house?
I changed the subject because I wasnt sure how to answer this to appease a 3 year old.

I need some kind of sharp sword to cut it [a package] open.

J: This is my house.
D: Where is daddys house?
J: Your house is called work.
D: Where is mommys house?
J: Here, she can live here with me.
D: Do you want me to live here?
J: Yes. I miss you every day.

Joke as told by Jack:
Did somebody say potato salad? [laughs hysterically]

When I drop Jack off at various places, he always asks:
J: Will you miss me mommy?
Me: Yes, Ill miss you. Will you miss me?
J: No. But I miss daddy.

Oopsie

I have a question for you:
[proceeds to tell me something instead of asking a question]

Let me tell you why we bring you flowers: because we love you.
[followed by a sweet hug]

Mommy, I brought you more flowers because the others were starting to be dead.
[brought new flowers on the day we came home from the hospital]

J: I just farted. I cant stop my farts.
D: Its ok to fart.
J: Its good for me to fart, Mommy.

I want chicken nuggets, chocolate milk, snacks and my Chapstick. Thats all I need.

Mommy, do you want to go to preschool, the Y or the Discovery Museum today?
Pick one.

We have four family now.

My baby likes me.
I think he likes me.

Us: Do mommy and daddy have rules?
J: Yes
Us: Does Nana have rules?
J: No
Us: Do Amy and Emily have rules?
J: Yes

Whats our first mission?

Walmart has guns. [in reference to water guns]

Can I have a cinnamon? [he meant vitamin]

I love you all so much.

Well I guess I better get camping.

I want to go [to preschool] every tomorrow.

Can we ride in the car [in the middle of the night] every night?
[in reference to trip to Childrens ER in middle of night]

The button on the wall is in case you need to call the nurse if you need help. Or in case theres a monster. [in reference to nurse call button at hospital]

[sleep talking while sick]
J: Hey mommy?
Me: Yes?
J: Babies drink warm milk and Jacks drink cold milk.
Me: Ok honey.
[falls back asleep]

J: We didnt lay on the blanket... we had a special thing that rolled and folded into a chair. Daddy had one and I had one.
Me: Was it a creeper?
J: Yep

That hurts my feelings [when Isaac cries]
When Sophie barks and Isaac cries, that hurts my feelings.

post pregnancy weight loss yoga | Alison Bat Mitzvah

post pregnancy weight loss yoga

On Friday June 20, 2014 Alison became a Bat Mitzvah.  For months, weeks and days Ive worked on planning the party while she worked on learning her Torah portion. The whole process of planning was very emotional.  I cried almost every day while putting together her video montage.  Then I cried during the service, more tears of joy than sorrow.  How did the time fly by so quickly?

And it occurred to me a few times I should have been working on a Bar Mitzvah last year. I prayed to Solomon to just watch over her, and I think sometimes he does.

baby losing weight during teething | Sometimes Life is Just Strange

baby losing weight during teething

Sometimes life is just strange and I find myself giving my head a whack with the back of my hand.

Alison asked about Solomon.  Alison asks a lot of questions and she is not the type of child who is easily pacified.  I often have to ask her to ask me the question again in a few days, when I have had time to think of and formulate a solid answer for her.

She asked how Solomon died.  How do you explain pPROM to a ten-year old?  Somehow I managed an answer.  She knew that when a baby is in a moms tummy, the baby is swimming in water.  I told her this was special fluid that helps the baby breath, like a fish.  I explained how my water came out.  She asked if this is what it means when the water breaks so I know she understands a little of the mechanics.

I told her usually the water breaks when a mommy is 9 months pregnant and the baby is ready to be born.  But in my case, the water came out at 5 months.  And because the water helped Solomon breath and grow, and the water was gone, he died.

She got it.  She totatly seemed to understand, and went on to resume playing.  Go figure.

hcg pregnancy weight loss | Ora et Labora Preparing for Birth

hcg pregnancy weight loss

Im 37 weeks pregnant. My midwife appointments are weekly now. Weve started to prepare in earnest for the arrival of baby - washing the last of the newborn clothes and blankets, setting up the crib, and organizing cloth diapers. The birth center where I hopefully will deliver the baby requests that I pack my bags by 37 weeks, which has got me thinking about the impending labor and birth.

Ive never been one to worry about or dread labor. I was perfectly calm and confident going into the birth of my first child. Im sure much of that calmness came from naivete but I also trusted my body. Everything went smoothly and I have nothing but good memories of my first birth experience. Its not that it wasnt painful. It was. Or that it wasnt hard work. It was. Its just that everything went exactly how nature intended. It was a beautiful birth experience and didnt leave me with any reason to dread future labors or births. (You can read Lucias birth story here.)

Im not anxious about the physical aspects of birth this time either. Though multiple miscarriages shattered the confidence I had in my bodys ability to protect and nurture my child in the womb, I have no reason to believe that my body isnt fully capable of giving birth. I am, however, quite apprehensive about the emotional aspects of birth.

After my first miscarriage, when I was very early along with our third child (who would not long after become our second loss), I attended a friends birth. It was a lovely, beautiful birth and I was very honored to be a part of it. But, it was also very emotionally traumatizing. After the birth, I sobbed for twelve hours straight. Seeing that birth, perhaps especially because it was so beautiful, reminded me of what I would never have the with the child I lost. I would never be able to labor to bring him forth into this world. I would never get to hold him or touch him or see what he looked like. It wasnt until watching that birth that I realized how much we had truly lost. We lost a whole lifetime with our child and just the thought of missing that very first snippet of that life - just the pregnancy, labor and birth - was overwhelming in itself.

Many people have commented on how healing this pregnancy and the upcoming birth must be for me. That hasnt been my experience so far. Im hoping that the birth will be healing, but Im also preparing myself for the very feasible possibility that it will be the opposite, or most likely a combination of both. Every milestone and notable moment of this pregnancy that would have otherwise brought great joy has instead brought grief, reminding me of what I will never be able to experience with four of my children. I have wanted so badly to focus on the joy and these moments with this child instead of the lost moments with our other children. I desire so greatly to just be able to enjoy the present, but I feel constantly haunted by the past. Its not for lack of trying, but I just cant seem to find a way to consciously make it happen.

When I think about what I want from my upcoming birth, all I want is to be able to bond with my baby and focus on the beauty of his birth without it being completely overshadowed by the pain of previous losses. I know there is no way to completely block out the grief, pain, or memories of our other children, I just dont want those emotions to be the dominant ones. I dont want to look back on our childs birth and only remember the trauma and pain. After all, this birth is not about me but about my child and I dont want my babys entry into this world to be completely obscured by the death of his siblings. My child deserves to be recognized and acknowledged for his individual blessings and beauty to this world, and to have his birth be a joyful event all its own.

Aside from packing my bag (which I still havent done...) with items to take care of my physical needs during and after birth, Im also preparing in various ways for the emotional aspects of birth. Heres how:

First and foremost, prayer. Im especially leaning on the prayers of others. A dear friend (and babys future godmother) gave me a lovely baby blessing and sprinkle this past weekend and the prayers of the friends that came mean so very much for me. In addition to offering prayers for me there, each woman gave a bead that will become a bracelet that Ill wear while Im in labor to remember all the people praying for me. They also each took a candle home to light while after they are notified that Im in labor as a reminder to pray for me. How beautiful is that? To read more about a Catholic baby blessing, this post includes everything we did and the prayers that were said.

Im also planning to take the prayer intentions of others in to the birth center with me. So if you have an intention that you would like me to pray for, especially if its related to pregnancy, loss, or infertility, please leave it in the comments. I would be honored to pray for you. Ill compile them all into a document to print off and bring in with me.

Sacramentals and visuals, like the beautiful matching rosaries my husband and I have, the Marian statue I recently bought especially to bring to the birth, and my images of Our Lady of Guadalupe (whom I have a strong devotion to) will be accompanying us to the birth. I wish I had an image of Saints Zelie and Louis Martin to bring in as well since I have entrusted the baby and my pregnancy to their care, but since they are newly canonized, there isnt much out there of them yet. Maybe I have time to still order something though...

Young Living Independent Distributor Jennifer Anne Hansen sent me Lavender and Peace & Calm essential oils to use during labor. I consider them to be for both the physical and emotional aspects of birth and am super excited that each birth room already has a diffuser.

Ive also been spending a lot of time recently trying to connect with the babies we lost. Ive been talking to them and referring to them by name (something that is very difficult for me), thinking about what it would be like if they were living now, and grieving the milestones we missed. The first baby we lost, Francis, would be 17 months, and Julian would we 13 months, both most likely walking and talking. The most recent babies we lost, Adrienne and Christian, would be three and four months old, just exiting the newborn stage. My hope is that by fully acknowledging and grieving their losses now, the pain will be a little less later, making more room for the joy of our baby on the way.

And thats all Ive got right now. Any moms whove been in a similar emotional situation during a pregnancy after loss have advice for me? How was your labor and birth? What can I do to prepare emotionally?

pregnancy weight loss tricks | Isaacs Birth Story

pregnancy weight loss tricks

Its been one week since Isaac came into the world and in some ways I am still wrapping my head around how everything went. All pregnancies and births are different, and I dont think you can ever be fully prepared for how things will turn out. This experience was no exception.

We went to the hospital at midnight before our due date for a scheduled induction. Our baby was measuring big with a big head and we didnt want to take a chance of me having to deliver a really big head again (with Jack, it required a vacuum). Also there were the risk factors associated with having polyhdramnios – namely placental abruption and cord prolapse. Both of these risks are associated with your water breaking. With so much extra amniotic fluid in the uterus, there is an increased risk of the cord falling out before the baby is born (cord prolapse) or the placenta tearing away from the uterus (placental abruption). Both of which can be bad news for the baby and mother.

We arrived at the hospital shortly after midnight – we stopped on the way for some snacks. I ate a Twix bar as we drove up the hospital. We signed in at the front desk and waited for them to call us upstairs. Around 12:30am we were told that we could to go up.

Our nurse greeted us at the doors to Labor and Delivery. We noticed that the satellite hospital we were delivering at now had a NICU and we inquired about it. The lack of a NICU had been one of our initial concerns about delivering at Womens East instead of downtown. For a variety of reasons we stuck with East (Jack was also delivered at this hospital), so it was a relief to learn they officially had a NICU (just in case things didnt go as planned).

After signing more papers and discussing the induction process, my nurse gave me a gown and I hopped into bed to get things started. Around 1am, she finally started to slowly turn on the pitocin drip. Initially things were going fine. I had come in with contractions (that werent painful) but was still only 2cm. We hoped my body would kick in on its own and the pitocin would be a minor part of this delivery.

After 10 minutes the nurse came back in to turn my pitocin up to a 6 (I think we started at 4, though Im not entirely sure what those numbers mean). Almost immediately I started to get unbearable contractions. The kind where you feel like you are going to die. My nurse told me she would be back shortly and almost as soon as she walked out of the room my water broke.

I thought of the risks associated with your water breaking and immediately told Daniel to call the nurse. The water was gushing and the contractions were coming in waves without a break (very similar to my contractions with Jack after my water broke).

My nurse checked me and said I was already dilated to 5cm and I said I wanted an epidural as soon as possible. The contractions kept coming and the water kept coming. Another nurse came back in the room and they mentioned that there was meconium in the water.

Pretty soon the anesthesiologist was in the room. I made the mental note that he was the same person that had done my epidural with Jack. Between contractions he inserted the catheter and Daniel held my shoulders still while I tried not to move or cry. As soon as my legs were numb, the nurse mentioned that she was having a difficult time finding a heart beat for the baby.

Sometime during this process, my doctor had been called and the NICU had been called because of the meconium. My legs were numb but I continued to feel the contractions. My doctor checked me between waves of pain and I was already dilated to 8cm and things had only been happening for about 2 hours. The pitocin had been stopped since my body was doing the work on its own.

After getting checked my doctor mentioned that there was blood in the water that was gushing out and she was concerned about a placental abruption. During this time the nurses were turning me from side to side trying to find the babys heart beat. As the minutes ticked by, my doctor made the decision that for the safety of the baby and me we needed to go to the OR. During this period my anesthesiologist never had time to leave my room.

They immediately began prepping me for surgery and quickly explained to us what to expect. I asked if Daniel could come give me a kiss before we went to the OR. Then I started praying that things would go smoothly. Before I knew it, I was being whisked down the hallway to the OR.

The room was so bright with white walls and huge white lights. Somewhere in the background music was playing. The OR filled up quickly and it felt like only a few minutes before the cloths were draped and Daniel was sitting beside me again.

My drugs were pretty strong. My arms were numb and I could barely hold my eyes open so I lay there and just drifted. I was afraid to fall asleep. Daniel held my hand and I opened my eyes to see that he had stood up to watch the surgery proceed over the top of the blanket. He watched the entire process.

Within a few minutes our baby was out and Daniel said, "Its a boy." Shortly after, our boy started crying. He cried quite a bit and then they gave him to Daniel. He was born at 4:16am, weighed 6pounds 12 oz (like his big brother), was 20.25inches long and had dark blue eyes. His apgar scores were 6 and 8.

At this point I was shaking uncontrollably from the drugs. My arms where out to my sides and they began to ache at the shoulders. Every once in awhile I felt like I couldnt catch my breath and the anesthesiologist would tell me I was fine and that my oxygen levels were still at 100%.

I looked at our son, but was still having trouble focusing so Daniel continued to hold him. I started pitocin around 1am and our boy was born at 4:16am. It was all such an unexpected whirlwhind. It took another 20+ minutes to stitch me up and then we were off to recovery.

I continued to shake and I have never felt so thirsty in my life. Before we left the OR the anesthesiologist took pity on me and had squeezed water from a wash cloth into my parched mouth. I am so grateful that he did that for me. It was another hour before I was allowed ice chips. While we waited in recovery, they covered me with warm blankets to help with the shaking and put compression boots on my legs to prevent blood clots (I am at a higher risk for due to a blood clot 7 years ago).

The boots were very confusing at first because I didnt know they were on my legs. As feeling returned to me body, my legs would alternately start tingling. The nurses eventually noticed my confusion and let me know that the boots were making my legs tingle.

While in recovery I finally felt like I could use my arms enough to hold our baby. He immediately started nursing with very little help from me. We actually stayed in recovery for over an hour while he nursed heartily.

I think it was around 6am when they wheeled us back to my room. The delivery table was in the hallway outside my door. Whether vaginally or a c-section I was definitely having a baby before morning. Daniel later told me that the plan was to let me push if I was fully dilated when we reached the OR, but in the end my doctor decided that the c-section was the safest delivery for me and our baby.

I am thankful for my doctors quick thinking and that the surgery went so well. Back in my room they told me that I should get up and walk as soon as I could. I was able to sit in a chair later that afternoon.

I only stayed in the hospital about 2.5 days. We are home and recovering now. I cant drive for 2 weeks and am focusing on healing. It is hard to not over do it. For recovery you are supposed to get up and walk, while also resting as much as possible. Overall I feel pretty decent for having major surgery a week ago. I am confident that working out throughout my pregnancy has made recovery easier.
