baby weight loss 4 months | Outside 365 January 2016

baby weight loss 4 months

A friend of mine sends her son to a Forest Kindergarten (for preschoolers) here in Chattanooga. I love this concept and that one of their governing rules is that there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing choices.

Anyways, the kindergarten is located in Lookout Valley which is a little too far of a drive for me to commit to, but I found that I kept turning the concept over in my mind. We want our boys to love the outdoors and I think that so much learning and imagination happens when you are not hindered by toys – we love toys and electronics, but we also want natural landscapes to play a part in our kids upbringing.

So, I came up with this idea that there was no reason we couldnt try to spend a little bit of every day (regardless of the weather) outside. We live on an acre of wooded land that features rocky outcroppings; the playground across the street has woods with trails; we live one street over from a natural area with two additional miles of trails; and Signal Mountain and the greater Chattanooga area boasts tons of things to do outside. We can do this!

I mentioned my plan to Daniel and then we set out to make it happen.

The month of January was a tricky one. Temperatures ranged from the teens (in the south, that is cold!) to days in the 60s. There was rain and fog and sleet and snow. But there were also days with plenty of sunshine.

Did we succeed? Truth be told we did not get outside every day, but 22 days out of 31 we managed to spend at least an hour outside.

We went on hikes as a family to Sunset Rock and Mushroom Rock. We played in the snow. We discovered secret forts. We played on playgrounds with friends. We went on neighborhood walks and bike rides. And Jack spent a lot of time with his daddy playing on our property.

Isaac did not spent quite as many days outside, but at least half of the month we had him outdoors with us.

Both of our boys developed eczema on their hands from the cold, so we are trying to balance healing their hands with our desire for outdoor play. This goal of mine is a fluid one, but I hope that we will continue to get outside as much as we can this year.

And on the days we cant get out, we will look out our windows and dream of warmer days.

pregnancy weight loss natural | First Snow of 2016

pregnancy weight loss natural

Last week Storm Jonas turned into a blizzard and dumped a ton of snow in the northeast after hitting a good portion of the south. It seemed like it was snowing everywhere but east Tennessee, but on Friday night, as Daniel made his way home from work, the rain turned to big fat, wet snowflakes. Jack rushed out the door to greet the snow as it began to pile on our deck.

By bedtime several inches of snow had settled on the ground, creating a blanket of white that muffled the night sounds and reflected the full moon with a brightness of a flood light.

I love the calm and quiet that the snow brings (though as someone who has lived in the south for the last two decades, I also like when the snow leaves after a few days).

After a week of school closings and delays for the cold, it was nice to finally have a reward for being cooped up.

We had just enough snow to get the sled out and pull Jack around our neighborhood park, right across the street from our house. The little trail leading from our house to the park actually provided the perfect sledding hill for Jack (next year we will probably go to the golf course to do some real sledding).

This was Isaacs first snow and we were scrambling to find warm enough clothes for him. A size 2 rain jacket worked as a windbreaker over a fleece body suit. Im sure he was annoyed by all of the layers, but he seemed fascinated by the cold white stuff.

We let him ride with Jack on the sled (until Jack complained that he was too heavy). I think Isaac would have stayed out longer, but by the time he was up from his nap and ready to join big brother, Jack was getting cold.

The weather has been fairly mild this winter and we were caught off guard – Jacks hiking boots were too small, his rain boots had holes in them, and we didnt have any wind resistant pants. We had enough layers to keep him warm for about an hour, and then we stripped him down and sat him by the fire to sip hot chocolate to warm back up (to help keep his feet dry, we put his feet in plastic grocery bags before putting on his holey rain boots).

We awoke on Sunday morning to sub freezing temps and snow had not yet melted. My weather app said the temperature would be in the 40s by noon and Jack was up early and ready for church with 30 minutes to spare, so Daniel took him sledding one last time before we headed off the mountain.

I hope it snows again this winter (previous big snows have been in February), but if it doesnt snow again this year, Im glad Jack got one last sledding session in.

Its kind of hard to believe this is our third winter on Signal Mountain. We are looking forward to many more snow days (though if Im being honest, Im glad it only lasts for a few days).

baby weight loss 8 months | The Camp House

baby weight loss 8 months

When I first became a mom, four-and-a-half years ago, I had a difficult time letting go of the me before kids. I cant be certain, but perhaps it was hard to make the adjustment because I had spent my ENTIRE adult life (almost 10 years!) filling roles that did not include motherhood.

Thankfully my life circumstances at the time allowed me to continue working part-time as a graphic designer and I have been able to spend the last 5 years wearing multiple hats.

One of the biggest blessings of continuing part-time with my career, besides keeping a foot in the door and my skills up-to-date, is that I made a friend who understands the me who works. This has been helpful in so many ways since I no longer go to an office where I would be surrounded by peers.

We actually met through Craigslist, when I was first just starting up freelancing in the Chattanooga area, and we have been colleagues and friends ever since.

Initially 98% of our interaction was through email, but in recent years we have made an effort to get together several times a year for coffee or breakfast. We talk shop. We talk motherhood. We talk about life in general. We discuss current projects, client frustrations, new software, and she doesnt mind if I bring a baby along (Im pretty sure Jack tagged along as a newborn when she first interviewed me!).

Im so grateful that I live in a time that I can work remotely, and that I have peers who understand why I choose to freelance as well as the frustrations (and benefits) of working from home.

Today we met at The Camp House in downtown Chattanooga for breakfast. The place was hopping. I had a latte with my scrambled eggs, bacon, and potatoes with cheese. The food was simple but incredibly delicious. You know I love breakfast, and this place hit the spot. With lots of couches and big tables, The Camp House is a great place for a meeting or to work remotely (though maybe on a quieter day, today was super loud). They also have a huge outdoor area for warmer days.

The Camp House is a unique venue in that while it serves as a cafe during the day, and music venue in the evening, it is also a church on Sunday – a part of The Mission Chattanooga Community that meets in three distinct venues throughout the city of Chattanooga. If you havent had a chance to check out The Camp House, you really should.

baby weight loss 3 months | Birthday Party Fun

baby weight loss 3 months

Night Shift. Daniel is right in the middle of working 14 nights in a row. We are all doing the best we can to muddle through.

Last week I did my best to get our boys out of the house in the morning as much as possible so that Daniel could sleep.

Unfortunately (for Daniel) this morning we woke up to snow. Along with the snow, school is closed for the day as are several roads on our mountain. We are attempting to be quiet while being cooped up inside.

Only 6 more nights to go...

It worked to our advantage that this past Saturday we had two birthday parties to attend. Jack had a blast and Isaac somehow managed even though he only had one one-hour nap.

To start things off, we met up with friends at Air Bounce in the NorthGate Mall in Hixson. That place is really a little kid heaven. The kids had a ball bouncing and playing arcade games all morning. Isaac even managed to get in on some of the action.

We finished up with lunch at Chic-Fil-A in the mall before heading home to briefly see Daniel and then going to North Shore for party #2 at a local park.

The sun was out and the kids were all given paper airplanes to throw to their hearts content. By the end of the party the kids had mostly gotten the hang of throwing the airplanes and nobody wanted to leave.

Party #2 included a chocolate dirt cake and everyone got to make dirt cups, complete with gummy worms. My little boy was in heaven. The only thing that would have made this party better (for Jack) was if I had let him play in the mud. With temps in the 40s, wet mud was out of the question!

We have been so blessed to make such good friends since moving to Chattanooga. As for today, hopefully we can get some sledding before the snow melts.

after pregnancy weight loss meal plan | Freelance Mama

after pregnancy weight loss meal plan

On occasion I talk about freelancing and even use the hashtag freelance mama on Instagram, but I recently realized that a) not everyone knows what that means, and b) sometimes my parents are curious about my work. So I have decided to use this little space to periodically update about projects I am working on.

In the graphic design world (especially if you freelance part time) it is really feast or famine. Meaning I am either working crazy hours (while juggling my mommy responsibilities), or I am in a lull and enjoying the calm before the next storm.

I have been really bad about updating my portfolio in recent years, so maybe this will become an extension of that. At the very least, I will be able to look back and see what I was doing at this phase of my life.

Right now I am in a slower phase (which is a blessing since Daniel has been working nights for the last 14 days). Here is a glimpse of some of the projects I have been working on.

This is a textbook I am working on for Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. It is the biggest project I have taken on to date. A big part of this project, besides designing the 300+pages, is keeping everyone on track so that I get content in a timely manner. Managing the proofing process is also lots of fun. We are about halfway through this year-long project right now. May is the target print date.

This is an Annual Report I am in the process of wrapping up for The Crossnore School in Crossnore, NC. The Crossnore School is non-profit residential foster care home for children in crisis. This is the third year I have created their Annual Report.

An example from a recent ad campaign for The Crossnore School. Once concepts are approved, the ads are sent to various publications throughout the region and run for several months before we move on to the next campaign.

Ad created for Ascend Federal Credit Union, located in Tullahoma, TN. Ascend is a client that I take on overflow work for throughout the year.

Logo designed for the blog Stroll Through the South, located in Huntsville, AL.

As you can see, right now my projects vary from very corporate to smaller, local businesses. Last month I also wrapped up a catalog for a media company located in Chattanooga, TN as well as sold a personal design for a sign project. In the freelance world, you never know what you will have on your plate.
