pregnancy weight loss natural | First Snow of 2016

pregnancy weight loss natural

Last week Storm Jonas turned into a blizzard and dumped a ton of snow in the northeast after hitting a good portion of the south. It seemed like it was snowing everywhere but east Tennessee, but on Friday night, as Daniel made his way home from work, the rain turned to big fat, wet snowflakes. Jack rushed out the door to greet the snow as it began to pile on our deck.

By bedtime several inches of snow had settled on the ground, creating a blanket of white that muffled the night sounds and reflected the full moon with a brightness of a flood light.

I love the calm and quiet that the snow brings (though as someone who has lived in the south for the last two decades, I also like when the snow leaves after a few days).

After a week of school closings and delays for the cold, it was nice to finally have a reward for being cooped up.

We had just enough snow to get the sled out and pull Jack around our neighborhood park, right across the street from our house. The little trail leading from our house to the park actually provided the perfect sledding hill for Jack (next year we will probably go to the golf course to do some real sledding).

This was Isaacs first snow and we were scrambling to find warm enough clothes for him. A size 2 rain jacket worked as a windbreaker over a fleece body suit. Im sure he was annoyed by all of the layers, but he seemed fascinated by the cold white stuff.

We let him ride with Jack on the sled (until Jack complained that he was too heavy). I think Isaac would have stayed out longer, but by the time he was up from his nap and ready to join big brother, Jack was getting cold.

The weather has been fairly mild this winter and we were caught off guard – Jacks hiking boots were too small, his rain boots had holes in them, and we didnt have any wind resistant pants. We had enough layers to keep him warm for about an hour, and then we stripped him down and sat him by the fire to sip hot chocolate to warm back up (to help keep his feet dry, we put his feet in plastic grocery bags before putting on his holey rain boots).

We awoke on Sunday morning to sub freezing temps and snow had not yet melted. My weather app said the temperature would be in the 40s by noon and Jack was up early and ready for church with 30 minutes to spare, so Daniel took him sledding one last time before we headed off the mountain.

I hope it snows again this winter (previous big snows have been in February), but if it doesnt snow again this year, Im glad Jack got one last sledding session in.

Its kind of hard to believe this is our third winter on Signal Mountain. We are looking forward to many more snow days (though if Im being honest, Im glad it only lasts for a few days).

baby losing weight on formula | Birthday Dinner Public House

baby losing weight on formula

I am woefully behind on my blogging. So many happenings in the last two months of the year!

So my 35th birthday was last month. On the day of, a good friend asked if I was doing anything special. The truth of the matter is that a Wednesday birthday (at any age) is tough. But especially when you are a grown-up with a spouse who is at the very end of a very long (two-year) project and you have littles at home. Im not complaining, but that is how the dice fell this year.

I literally spent my birthday "dinner" in the drive through at Starbucks while my boys napped in the back before church.

My mom is the master at assigning different dates for different events (her birthday and anniversary are on the same day, so she has always chosen a separate day to celebrate), so this year we did the same... It just took over a month to find a date we had a sitter available AND that Daniel didnt have to work.

So a week ago (or two, I dont even know the days any more), Daniels mom was in town for Isaacs baby dedication and we took the opportunity to sneak off for a dinner date.

During Thanksgiving, Daniel had met his sisters for a Collective Soul concert at Track 29 and before the concert they ate at Public House. It was so good, he knew he had to take me back.

Since it was a Saturday, we called ahead to make a reservation. When we arrived we were surprised that the place wasnt overly crowded. They started to seat us at a tiny table right by the door, but we requested a booth further in the restaurant (thankfully they granted our request).

We enjoyed a solid two hours of talking, just the two of us. And I dont think we talked about kids (if we did, it was minimal). It was such a nice, and much needed, change of pace.

The food was glorious. My youngest sister-in-law said it best when she said the Peanut Butter Pie was like a high five in your mouth. All of the food was truly a high five your mouth, in the best possible way.

We started our meal with an appetizer of fried pickles and pimento cheese with crostini. Daniel would not typically eat (much less try pimento cheese), but he really liked it. The crostini was charred perfectly and had an amazing smoky flavor.

For our main dishes, Daniel chose the salmon with rice pilaf while I had the fried chicken with mac-n-cheese. All of it was amazing. The salmon had a smoky flavor that I dont think I could copy at home and the fried chicken is probably the best that I have had.

To top the meal off we chose the Peanut Butter Pie with coffee for me (decaf). A serious high five in the mouth! The food was so good and the restaurant didnt feel pretentious, a plus in our books. We would give it 5/5 stars.

weight loss during early pregnancy | Questions

weight loss during early pregnancy

I woke up last Saturday morning with an inkling that this might be the day, the day when Alison or Adam has questions. I mentioned this to Eric who replied, "You say that every year." And that is true. But this year I was right.

Alison accompanied me on this years Walk To Remember - chosing this activity over watching her brother play soccer, or should I say run around the soccer field with a group of 5 year old boys with a soccer ball in the midst.

The walk was proceding and it was a good half hour before Ali said anything. She asked if we could see our page. I knew she meant the scrapbook page I had done for Solomon, so we walked over to it and I showed her. Then she asked if we could see our quilt square. So I walked her over to where the quilt was displayed and showed her. Her first reaction was to ask, "Who was born on March 8?" I told her, "the baby." She asked, naturally, "What baby?" and I told her, "the baby who died in my tummy before you were born." She seemed to take my remarks in and felt satisfied. Until...

Until my friends daughter asked her, "Was the baby who died a girl or a boy?" And Alison in her sweet voice replied, "I have no idea what youre talking about." So I told her the baby was a boy and his name was Solomon, Solomon was the baby who died in my tummy before you were born. Again she took in my remarks and seemed satisfied.

I have no idea what she thinks. She knows a photo of our family adorns a book cover but I dont think she understands why or what the book is about.

I wonder if I handled her questions ok, and appreciate that she didnt ask more than I was willing to answer. For my children, lifes questions will forever go beyond "where do babies come from?"

weight loss during 9th month pregnancy | STYLE

weight loss during 9th month pregnancy

One of my favorite things to do, while Im out shopping, is to look for little style treasures that are inexpensive but look like I have the goods. Cheap finds that look like quality purchases.
I can splurge and add good pricey pieces to my wardrobe, every once in a while.  But for the most part, with two kids and my husband and I full-time freelancing, our budget doesnt accommodate that too often. So, if I want to change up an outfit or two, this is what I do. Ill go in a random store that I 99.9% of the time would never find myself buying anything from, and Ill put my search eyes on. More times than not, I dont come away with anything. But, every once in a while, I do.

Sometimes, Ill see a pair of earrings, a scarf or a necklace etc. that would totally pass as a Free People gem, a bauble from Urban or have a mock, hand crafted look of unique pieces that I like.  Like not too long ago, I randomly saw a pair of earrings that caught my eye at a retail store that I havent shopped at since I was like 10. I stopped and said to myself, "If those were at my free people store for $35,  Id buy them right now."  They were only $5.  Yep, I snagged them.  Now, every time I wear them, I get countless "ooohs" and "aaaahs." haha. You never know what you might find.

But since last year, when I began the journey of minimalism, I now have to make myself really think about the purchase, no matter how small, before I buy it.  I dont want to let myself hoard or collect clutter, anymore.  By being more intentional, this helps guarantee that I really love it and can wear it with almost everything.  Hope some of my little tips here will help you stretch your wardrobe and inspire you to shop with new eyes. ;)

Happy treasure hunting mommas, loves and friends!

maintaining weight loss during pregnancy | Sparrow Song

maintaining weight loss during pregnancy

Sparrow and her little best friend Isabel. They both have been friends with each other and with Kael since they were born, and they go to school together.  photo by anna naphtali

Today, in just under an hour actually, one of my favorite little souls is having her third and final open heart surgery. Its 6:45 AM and in just 10 minutes, Sparrow Song, who is 3 years old,  the daughter of one of my best friends, Jessie, will be taken by the doctors and their angel hands to begin the surgery. This is as close to home as it can get for me. Jessie and I were pregnant together, and Ive walked with her through her previous two surgeries. This one is the heaviest to me. I love this little girl as if she were my own.  Kael and Birdie go to school together, her little fire of a personality is a part of the tapestry of our lives. Her adorable, small, raspy voice is kind of my favorite thing ever. (You need to hear her sing Katy Perrys Eye of the Tiger. haha!) Sparrow is a strong, bright little thing. You know it for a fact, if youve ever met her. She is a miracle and will continue to be in all of our lives.

As I pulled into the parking deck of the childrens hospital, it started to hit me. This is actually happening. As I walked in, the sinking feeling in my stomach got heavier. But, once I saw her in her little hospital gown and I heard "HEY JESS!" with that classic coy smirk and her getting down from her daddys lap to give me a hug...my heart was completely lost. I left the room, through the double doors and sobs took over my body. I kept telling myself, "One more. Just one more surgery and then its done. "

Today, we are setting up camp at the hospital to wait, to pray, to love, to cry, to laugh and to support our friends and our favorite little song bird. Wed love you to be a part of that with us! Were going to overload this waiting room with love, guys!

Surgery is 4-6 hours long (its the Fontan with a fenestration.)  They stop her heart, put her on a bypass machine and repair what was defected before she was even born: double inlet left ventricle, a transposition of the great arteries and an interrupted aortic arch. Shell be in the hospital for at least 2 weeks.

There are a few ways you can help and be a part of Sparrows story. You can send encouraging and supporting tweets, emails, letters or messages to Sparrow/her family throughout the day and during her upcoming recovery over the next several weeks. Also, Sparrows big brother Noah, is 4, he loves getting letters and will love delivering them to his sister. ;) Little surprise packages via snail mail are always golden and you can also contribute financially.

IDEAS FOR PACKAGES
*Age-appropriate movies (DVD’s)
*Books & puzzles – the girl LOVES books and puzzles!
*Art & Education – paper, pens, colors, crayons and anything that would assist her in learning how to write her letters, numbers, colors, shapes, etc…  She is VERY interested in learning  and her momma is a teacher, shed rather stoke that fire than let her watch 5 Disney movies a day.

baby losing weight on solids | 13th Wedding Anniversary

baby losing weight on solids

Today marks our 13th anniversary. Remember yesterday how I said that Wednesday is a tough day to do any celebrating? Well that statement applies to anniversaries too.

Thankfully we will not be waiting over a month to celebrate this milestone. We have a little excursion planned to the mountains for some much needed R&R. Well, as much rest and relaxation as you can get with two kiddos and a dog in tow...

Thirteen years. 4,745 days. 113,880 hours.

In that period of time, we have had 9 jobs between us; moved 7 times; purchased 6 (new to us) cars; owned 3 different houses in 3 different states; had 2 precious little boys; and adopted one ornery dog.

It feels like just last year, we were newly married and would take long walks after dinner and talk about the future. Weird how that future is now. Some of our dreams have hit their mark, others have fallen short, but we are still in it together.

For our very first anniversary we spent New Years Eve weekend backpacking in the Smoky Mountains (we actually both forgot our anniversary that year!). The memories from that trip include staying in a shelter on the Appalachian Trail with a group of Eagle Scouts, not exactly romantic, but it suited us fine. This year we will be back in the Smokies, kids in tow. We wont be staying in a rustic shelter and we will have our kids with us, but we will be in a place we love. And we will be there together. What more could you ask for?

can weight loss occur during pregnancy | Words I Love

can weight loss occur during pregnancy

" ...It is the stories and the cherishing that make us beautiful. May you catch each falling moment in your hands and kiss it as it goes." -Mary Wein These are the Lines of a Story

Those are the last words from an essay that I just read this morning, after a friend posted it on facebook. And now, my heart is a lovely mess. You seriously need to take 5 minutes and read it. I was left in tears. Good tears.  It is too precious and filled my heart with so much truth and love. Written by a mother, embracing her body and the beauty of this story of life. Grab a tissue, the last paragraph was it for me, as she wrote to her son...get ready. I want to raise my boys with this heart and ode to true beauty, helping mold them into amazing future loves and husbands. Its given me a whole new awareness of how I see and treat myself, especially in front of them.  *insert love filled sob here.* Anna, Im so glad you posted this.

Love and happy reading.
Jess

weight loss during end of pregnancy | Ralph

weight loss during end of pregnancy

I saw Ralph last Saturday at Mike and Maries holiday party. I havent seen him in two years, not since the last time Eric and I were able to be at M&Ms holiday party. Ralph is a friend of my husband, they used to work for the same company, and Ralph lives a mere seven minutes from our house (not that we ever see him!)

What distinguishes Ralph to me is that he knew me during my happiest time and through my saddest, a span of only three years. When I met Ralph, we hit it off right away - he was a good buddy of Erics and through lots of fun times, parties and outings, we had a blast. Were even the same sign, Capricorn, but dont ask me what that might have to do with anything.

After Solomon, I was a different person. And somehow Ralph gave me laughs two and three. It sounds funny to write it like that but thats how it was.

At Atlantis in the Bahamas, I spent a miserable week. This was Erics company trip and he worked really hard to earn it. I was devastated as Id planned to be pregnant, nearly 8 months so and here I was, nothing. One night we were at one of the club with Ralph, Mike, Marie and some others. All of a sudden, Ralph starts rapping to a Madonna song, I forget which one. The hilarity of the situation is hard to capture. Ralph was a 40-ish, short, Italian, divorced-with-no-children, guy from Queens. He did not fit any mold of any rapper anywhere on the planet. The joy I felt at laughing in relief could be measured on the Richter scale. That was laugh #2.

Of course I was pregnant for the third time in January 2001, dreading what would happen in the future. Eric convinced me we should go away for a ski weekend, in which I wouldnt ski, go snow-mobiling, drink or sit in the hot tub. So I read a book, White Oleander by Janet Fitch, and an issue of "O" - the magazine Oprah Winfrey puts out. Ralph, Mike and Marie and assorted brothers, brothers-in-laws and friends of Mike and Ralphs were also at the cabin. I forgot which meal it was, we were all gathered around. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. All of a sudden, Ralph starts to sink. Now mind you he is already sitting in a chair at the dinner table and seems to be moving south involuntarily. Turns out, the chair rail started to deteriorate right before everyones eyes. We were all a ball of hysterics, even me. When Ralph finally emerged from the floor, you could tell he thought this was just the funniest thing.

We spoke about Ralphs chair incident on Saturday, and Ive been meaning to post since then. When I think back to the dark time, its hard to remember that there were glimpses of light. And Ralph is someone whom I lease expected to be the light-giver.

early pregnancy weight loss normal | Biscuit Love

early pregnancy weight loss normal

When we first became parents, I read a lot about the importance of continuing to date your husband (even writing about it here). Weekly if possible. In theory, I think this is a fantastic idea, but our reality never seems to measure up to that standard.

Daniel and I have had plenty of time to date (10+years if you include our dating years), so we dont feel too guilty when current dates tend to lean more toward "family" dates. Part of that has been changing our expectations and being ok with this. More often than not our alone dates include a bowl of ice cream and Netflix. I think you just do what you have to do and dont get hung up on a date being leaving your house, without kids. I mean, we even took our kids on our recent 13th anniversary trip.

But if we have the opportunity to go out, sans kids, we try to jump on it. Holidays tend to work in our favor in this regard. Our family loves the chance to hang out with our boys and who are we to turn down free baby sitting?

Most recently we were able to sneak off on a brunch and furniture shopping date. We left our boys with Daniels sister and headed out to grab breakfast for lunch (my fave). We had initially planned to go to The Pancake Pantry but the line was wrapped around the outside of the building (and it was raining). So instead we found ourselves wandering over to the Gulch for a little Biscuit Love.

Biscuit Love also had a wait, but if you were willing to sit at the bar (we were, we didnt have kids!), you could get in immediately.

According to Nashville Guru, The "East Nasty" and "Southern Benny" were the dishes to get. And they did not disappoint.

Getting away was just what we needed – uninterrupted conversation, followed by time browsing local stores for a new dining table that we are dreaming about.

Our next date may not happen until Easter (hopefully sooner), but until that time we savor these moments together and embrace the days that our dates involve our whole family or just the two of us, on the couch after our kids are in bed.
