I am woefully behind on my blogging. So many happenings in the last two months of the year!

So my 35th birthday was last month. On the day of, a good friend asked if I was doing anything special. The truth of the matter is that a Wednesday birthday (at any age) is tough. But especially when you are a grown-up with a spouse who is at the very end of a very long (two-year) project and you have littles at home. Im not complaining, but that is how the dice fell this year.

I literally spent my birthday "dinner" in the drive through at Starbucks while my boys napped in the back before church.

My mom is the master at assigning different dates for different events (her birthday and anniversary are on the same day, so she has always chosen a separate day to celebrate), so this year we did the same... It just took over a month to find a date we had a sitter available AND that Daniel didnt have to work.

So a week ago (or two, I dont even know the days any more), Daniels mom was in town for Isaacs baby dedication and we took the opportunity to sneak off for a dinner date.

During Thanksgiving, Daniel had met his sisters for a Collective Soul concert at Track 29 and before the concert they ate at Public House. It was so good, he knew he had to take me back.

Since it was a Saturday, we called ahead to make a reservation. When we arrived we were surprised that the place wasnt overly crowded. They started to seat us at a tiny table right by the door, but we requested a booth further in the restaurant (thankfully they granted our request).

We enjoyed a solid two hours of talking, just the two of us. And I dont think we talked about kids (if we did, it was minimal). It was such a nice, and much needed, change of pace.

The food was glorious. My youngest sister-in-law said it best when she said the Peanut Butter Pie was like a high five in your mouth. All of the food was truly a high five your mouth, in the best possible way.

We started our meal with an appetizer of fried pickles and pimento cheese with crostini. Daniel would not typically eat (much less try pimento cheese), but he really liked it. The crostini was charred perfectly and had an amazing smoky flavor.

For our main dishes, Daniel chose the salmon with rice pilaf while I had the fried chicken with mac-n-cheese. All of it was amazing. The salmon had a smoky flavor that I dont think I could copy at home and the fried chicken is probably the best that I have had.

To top the meal off we chose the Peanut Butter Pie with coffee for me (decaf). A serious high five in the mouth! The food was so good and the restaurant didnt feel pretentious, a plus in our books. We would give it 5/5 stars.

Night Shift. Daniel is right in the middle of working 14 nights in a row. We are all doing the best we can to muddle through. 

Last week I did my best to get our boys out of the house in the morning as much as possible so that Daniel could sleep. 

Unfortunately (for Daniel) this morning we woke up to snow. Along with the snow, school is closed for the day as are several roads on our mountain. We are attempting to be quiet while being cooped up inside. 

Only 6 more nights to go...

It worked to our advantage that this past Saturday we had two birthday parties to attend. Jack had a blast and Isaac somehow managed even though he only had one one-hour nap. 

To start things off, we met up with friends at Air Bounce in the NorthGate Mall in Hixson. That place is really a little kid heaven. The kids had a ball bouncing and playing arcade games all morning. Isaac even managed to get in on some of the action.

We finished up with lunch at Chic-Fil-A in the mall before heading home to briefly see Daniel and then going to North Shore for party #2 at a local park.

 

The sun was out and the kids were all given paper airplanes to throw to their hearts content. By the end of the party the kids had mostly gotten the hang of throwing the airplanes and nobody wanted to leave.

Party #2 included a chocolate dirt cake and everyone got to make dirt cups, complete with gummy worms. My little boy was in heaven. The only thing that would have made this party better (for Jack) was if I had let him play in the mud. With temps in the 40s, wet mud was out of the question!

We have been so blessed to make such good friends since moving to Chattanooga. As for today, hopefully we can get some sledding before the snow melts.

One of the downfalls of moving often when you are growing a family is that you sometimes miss out on baby-related events (like church baby showers and baby dedications). 

In the case of Jack, we had not yet placed membership at our church in Huntsville when it was time for baby dedication Sunday. So while we were in the audience, we did not get to participate in standing on stage with the other parents (we officially placed membership shortly after that Sunday).

This past Sunday was New Arrivals Day (or baby dedication day) at the church we currently worship with in Chattanooga. These events always make me feel a bit emotional. To start there was a slideshow of the new babies, followed by comments from the Childrens Minister and then all of the families with new arrivals joined the Pulpit Minister on stage to dedicate our sweet babies.

As we walked up on to the stage I was struggling to choke back my emotions, but then Jack started acting goofy and I had something to focus on instead of crying (so really it was a good distraction).

Before we were called up onto the stage, the Childrens Minister explained that each family would receive a Mason Jar filled with 938 pennies to represent each week our child will be in our care, he then challenged us to make each week with our kids count. 

Once on stage our pulpit minister exhorted us to dedicate our children to God and to raise them as the bible has called us.

He also requested that the congregation support us all in our endeavor to raise godly children (it was more eloquent than that, but I was trying to keep Jack from spinning around the stage – baby dedications are not a great place to practice spinjitzu). 

Im thankful for our church family and for the opportunity to participate in an official baby dedication. Our prayer, and goal as parents, is that our children will grow up to love the Lord with all their hearts, souls and minds, and to love others as they love themselves. 

Afterwards the church provided a meal for all of the families so that we could have the opportunity to fellowship. We were thankful to have Daniels parents join us on this special day.

I read Freakonomics back in 2008 (and then again in 2013) and remember enjoying the perspective of the world that authors Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner offered. The ideas were fresh and exciting. I have not read their second book, Superfreakonomics, but Im guessing it is more of the same as book 1.

I was eager to read their third book, Think Like a Freak, when I saw it at the library. I thought it was a good way to kick off my reading for 2015. The book was an easy read, but the perspective no longer felt fresh. It was more same-old, same-old. I think the authors have a very unique way of looking at the world and I would like to see that perspective applied to something new. Their last chapter talks about quitting, maybe they are aware that it is time to make a change...

I gave this book 2 out of 5 stars on Goodreads.

Our Christmas this year started out very low key. It was just the four of us. 
At home.

After several days of rain and fog, there was a break in the weather and Christmas Eve Day was warm and sunshiny. We took the opportunity to take a family bike ride around our neighborhood. Each time we do this, Jack gets a little better with his biking skills.

 

That evening we drove around to see neighborhood lights in our town. Jack must have been worn out from our bike ride because he fell asleep almost as soon as we started driving. Before heading home from the lights, we grabbed a pizza from Dominos.

Christmas Eve we let the boys unwrap one family gift containing pajamas, hot chocolate and a Christmas movie. This year it was A Charlie Brown Christmas. Jack thought it was "cute."

Once in bed, Jack said it was too long until good morning time (what he currently calls morning) and that he didnt want to wait that long for Christmas. I told him that the sooner he closed his eyes and slept, the sooner it would be Christmas. He fell right to sleep.

 

While the boys slept, Daniel and I wrapped the last of the gifts.

I dont know how many years will go like this, but right now Jack and Isaac both sleep in until after 8:00 and even after he was awake, Jack was super patient about the whole Christmas presents thing. We ate a leisurely breakfast and didnt start on the stockings or presents until after 9:00am.

This is the first year we had Jack choose presents to give each of us. He really enjoyed picking out something for Isaac, then taking a turn wandering around Target with me to find something for Daniel, and finally going with Daniel to find something for me. Next year I may have him make presents, but this was a nice introduction to the idea of giving gifts.

 

We dont do Santa presents, but we did do a visit to Santa on our trip last week where we discovered that a Ninja Turtle costume was high on Jacks wish list. 

Since we had already purchased gifts, Daniel made a last minute order from Amazon and we told Jack that the Ninja Turtle costume was from Isaac. He said it was his favorite gift and that he got everything he wanted. We dont buy a lot of gifts, so that was sweet to hear.

Isaac experienced a lot of firsts this Christmas, each experience is so new and he really seemed to enjoy himself. He is sitting really well and sat in the middle of the floor where he had a ball pulling the wrapping paper off of gifts (and then trying to eat it). He was a bit ambivalent about his toys, but did seem to love his brothers toys. 

My sister has spent her entire life complaining about how the first-born gets everything and the second-born (and subsequent kids) get overlooked. It is really hard as a parent because I already see that playing out with Isaac. 

While he is well loved, he mostly gets hand-me-downs and where Jack was fawned over with visits and excessive presents and a million "first Christmas" ornaments, Isaac did not. Thankfully he is too little to care, but I hope to make an effort to make sure he feels equal in that regard as he grows.

 

Where we live, the weather was unseasonably warm and rainy on Christmas day. Heavy fog and raining cats and dogs. My brother drove up from Nashville and barely made it to our house before two of the three roads roads up our mountain closed, leaving one access on and off the mountain. 

The rain, along with flood warnings, continued all day. You dont think about a mountain having flooding conditions, but the runoff down the mountain was swift moving and enough to make the roads treacherous. 

Hydroplaning on a mountain road that drops off on one side is not a good prospect. Also, the runoff down cliffs was bringing down a lot of debris that had to be cleared from the roads. 

One of the roads actually ended up collapsing in one spot from the barrage of water. It was a crazy weather day for sure.

We have a tradition of going to eat Hibachi on Christmas Night (Jacks first Hibachi experience was when he was about a month old). With the crazy weather and only one way off the mountain we debated the logic in leaving our home. In the end, tradition won and we safely made it to have dinner with one of Daniels sisters and their dad and his wife.

Hibachi was a little bit of a disappointment this year in that our chef lit the table on fire as soon as he stepped up to the table. Normally the chef lights an onion volcano at a later point in the meal, and that is what we had prepped Jack for. Unfortunately Jack freaked out and ran away from the table, and our chef proceeded to cook our meal without any special effects. 

Of course Jack was fine and ended up standing in his chair watching the other chefs in the restaurant do cool tricks with their knives while lighting tables and onion volcanoes on fire. Isaac was pretty mesmerized by the whole process. Thankfully the food was delicious and we enjoyed our visit with family, even if I felt a bit cheated with the show.

Two days after Christmas we headed to Nashville to spend some time with Daniels family. We had a lovely Christmas dinner and the kids received more presents. 

Up until now Jack has been the only kid, this year two more boys were added to the mix – we had another baby and one of Daniels cousins also had a little boy. It was fun seeing the two little boys interact (they are about 2 months apart).

After Christmas with Daniels family was wrapped up, we went to meet some of our old friends from Cookeville. Jack had a blast playing with their kids and we enjoyed catching up. Its been four years (too long) since our last visit!

 

Finally rounding out this extended Christmas week, we went to my aunts house in Ashland City where we were able to visit with some of my extended family including one aunt and uncle and their family from Canada, as well as my parents who had driven over from Arkansas.

What started out as a very low-key Christmas ended in a very busy week of visiting and seeing as many people as we could see. We are all set for a quiet evening at home for New Years and hopefully we will accomplish some house projects in the next couple of days.
