Just starting this whole blog thing, not sure how good Ill be at it. I lost my son Solomon to pprom resulting in his stillbirth on March 8, 2000. I had a myriad of physical and mental healing to do. The physical was easier. We got pregnancy again 4 months later and we lost that to blighted ovum. Two month after that, pregnancy #3. I held my breath, pretended to be happy and endured mental hell for 9 months until Alison was born at 38 weeks. A big beautiful 8 pounds 2 ounce bundle. Oops, 11 months later we are pregnant again. Adam was born 19-1/2 months after Alison. A physically wonderful pregnancy until *boom* preterm labor and 11 weeks of terbutaline and bedrest. Two cerclages, two c-sections.

Now I speak at pregnancy loss groups, pregnancy after loss groups, have been involved in program planning for the First Candle/SIDS Alliance and International Stillbirth Alliance conference in DC in September 2005. And I wrote and edited a book, "Journeys: Stories of Pregnancy After Loss." A compilation by 11 authors of loss stories coupled with pregnancy after loss stories. Hopefully it will be a comfort to those finding themselves *SPALS*

Its Fall, yall!

All weekend it was cold and rainy and felt like fall. On Monday we woke up to sunshine and warm weather again.

Even though it was warm, we decided to head to Ellijay, Georgia to visit the Hillcrest Apple Orchards and Burts Pumpkin Farm. We did a weekend trip with my siblings a couple of years ago and really enjoyed the area.

This year we visited on a Monday and the experience was a mixed bag. Hillcrest Orchards was a bit of a disappointment. I thought the website had said that the main thing we would miss out on during the week was apple picking. But in reality, there wasnt much going on at the apple orchard.

The playgrounds were fun, of course. As was the petting zoo, but the wagon ride was better at Burts and everything else was closed (no food, no jumping pillow, no pig races, no music). The best part was definitely no crowds. That, and Jack was pumped about his apple cider cup (and we did come home with a gallon of apple cider and some local honey). 

After the orchard, we headed over to Burts Pumpkin Farm and had a great experience. Maybe it just fits us better? 

The hayride was peaceful, and visiting on a Monday was perfect because there were very few people there (nobody accidentally photobombing my photos).

We picked out a huge (to us) pumpkin and Jack insisted on helping Daniel carry it to the wheelbarrow. 

Jack also wore himself out running through the rows and rows of pumpkins (and we didnt have to pay extra for that perk!).

After our busy day, we looked up a local place to eat. 

We decided on Appalachia Grill and followed our phones directions to the restaurant... only to discover that it didnt exist. Instead we ended up at Reverend BBQ Billys where we partook in some excellent BBQ. Some times it pays to get lost.

We had a wonderful day and Im so glad we had a chance to do something fun as a family.

My stepson has a family heritage project to do, and he, his mother, my husband and myself hope to get a good grade on it. The project has many pieces, and trying to figure out whats appropriate in a divorce/stepfamily situation has proven easier than it would appear.

One of the pieces to be constructed is a poster of the family tree. The sheet we are using as a guideline stops at my stepson, in which case it does not include myself or the children I have with my husband who are my stepsons half-siblings. No big deal really. But my stepsons mother, who is doing the poster, not only has generously include myself and my children, she sent me an email asking how to acknowledge Solomon. I was both shocked and touched.

At the time of my loss I was convinced she did not understand. And to be honest, I dont know for sure that at the time she did. But today is a new day and she gets it. As Im not comfortable sharing Solomons picture, we agreed to use a charm that depicts a little boy, similar to the one I was given by my husband for my first mothers day. When I say first, I do mean first: immediately after we lost Solomon. I was a mother, a childless one, but still a mother.

So a photo of a charm depicting my little boy will be mounted on the poster along with pictures of myself, daughter and son. Im thrilled.

can weight loss happen during pregnancy

Today is *That* Day - as I think of it. That day I was supposed to be having my first child. That day that my husband believes is that "guess date the doctor gives you so you can set up your office pool." Its now 6 years later on *that day* and I can recall my feelings of sadness. Waking up in a hotel room in Washington DC, my consolation prize; crying from my guts and hoping a baby would be brought to me along with room service. It never materialized of course and Eric and I spent a hot sticky day touring the Lincoln Memorial and other wonderful sites.

And now 6 years later, I sit and reflect while Alison is in day camp and Adam is tearing up the backroom. An email from my uncle let me know that a new baby was born today. So the date has now taken on a positive for me. *That* date is now *this* date, belonging to Amanda Lilly, whom I wish a lifetime of love, happiness and peace.

The chilly air, on this late afternoon in early December, some winter sunshine, a Christmas tree farm and sweet friends, made up a perfect day of memories for us this year.

Life with little souls, is an extra special experience during the holidays. And sharing that wonder with people who have the same heart as you is priceless. We all eventually found ourselves lost in the rows of trees, searching for just the right one. Forest Kael kept calling out at the top of his voice for his buddies, Dash and Ollie. Theyd find each other and be off again, avoiding tree stumps, begging for the right to hold the saws and talking like big boys about who knows what. They ran throughout the groves with sticks, laughing and scheming.  Marshmallows were roasted, hot chocolate was sipped and the wild, happy squeals from these little rascals were like Christmas bells to our ears.

It was a golden day to my heart. Memories made and stored away in my treasure box to be brought out for loving, on another day.

Today marked our second visit to the Hidden Hills Farm and Saddle Club for a play day. Its hard to believe that Isaac was only a month old for our first visit! Thankfully Daniel was off of work today (after working the last 10 days with only one day off) and we were able to take advantage of the beautiful weather and a farm full of tractors to play on.

This play day was made for Jack and Daniel. They were in a truck heaven. Hopefully in a couple of years, Isaac will be enjoying this experience just as much.

There was a skid steer that Jack got to drive (and then ride in the bucket of).

There were tractors to sit on and play with all of the controls (and Daniel gladly patiently answered every question Jack had about every lever and button in every tractor).

There was a backhoe to operate (Daniel was in his mid-twenties before he got to use a backhoe, and may have been a teeny bit jealous).

There was a bucket on the backhoe to ride up in the air in (you just had to trust the operator working the bucket).

There was a Kubota utility vehicle to drive in the back field. Jack had fun steering it any way but in a straight line.

 

 

And of course, there were horse rides again.

This was little boy heaven (and I have two little boys and one big one if you count Daniel).

The Cow Milking day that we attended in May was a fun event, but the Tractor Day is going on our calendars as a family day for the future.

If you missed this weeks Tractor Day, they are having another one next Thursday, Sept. 24. The cost to visit the farm is $10 for your first child and $5 for subsequent kids (babies are free). Tractor Day is definitely worth the visit. We had a wonderful time!
