hypothyroidism pregnancy weight loss | Trigger Warnings

hypothyroidism pregnancy weight loss

A sweet friend of mine (Kendra of Catholic All Year) recently warned me that the new Sherlock Holmes movie, Mr. Holmes, features a prominent miscarriage story line that may be difficult for some to watch. She also said the movie, which stars Ian McKellen as an old Holmes, was really well-done. Ill probably watch it (eventually, when it comes out on video - getting to the movie theatre is a rare occurrence for me) but I cannot explain how much that warning means to me. I dont outright avoid movies, books, or other media that contain elements of pregnancy loss (in many ways, I often find the inclusion of them to be very validating), but I do like the ability to prepare myself beforehand. Its the element of surprise that makes those scenes so difficult to handle.

Perhaps youve heard the term "trigger warning" before. Thats exactly what Im talking about - a warning of the presence of a certain topic that may trigger a strong emotional reaction. My triggers are pregnancy and infant loss and, to some extent, infertility. Perhaps those are your triggers too, or maybe they are cancer, or sexual abuse, or domestic abuse, or divorce, or death of a parent, or any great number of things.

Knowing and understanding your triggers is important. It does not make you weak to know what you should avoid, or what you should only confront after preparation and in certain cultivated circumstances. You are honoring yourself when you acknowledge and adequately address (even completely avoid) the topics that have the ability to distress you.

Last summer, I was in a very vulnerable state. Id gone through my second miscarriage in February and we were actively trying to conceive again, with nothing to show for our efforts but negative pregnancy tests and tears. And it seemed that EVERY. SINGLE. book, movie, or TV show I watched quite unexpectedly included pregnancy or infant loss in the plot line. It got to the point where I started writing them down because it was just absurd how many their were: (Amazon affiliate links below)

The Help, Downton Abbey, Gran Hotel
The Duchess, Annes House of Dreams, The Tudors, Whered You Go Bernadette

This was within a month, folks. A month! Three books, three TV shows, and a movie. None of which I had any clue would have any baby loss story line, but it was in each and every one. Some had not much more than a short scene or brief background story, but it was there all the same, startling me to my core. And the thing is, each of these was pretty great, Id recommend anyone watch/read them (well, except maybe the Tudors - the sex scenes in that one were a little too much for me so I only made it a few episodes in). Im sure I would have watched or read them anyway even if I had known they contained loss BUT I wouldnt have watched them that summer. Or one right after another. Or without a bit of forethought and preparation. Or with people other than my husband. I would have cushioned them between light, bright little comedies and feel-good stories.

Im not quite sure how to avoid something like this in the future. Do I go on Wikipedia and read the detailed plot before I watch any movie or read any book? I frequently do this for movies and books anyway and dont really mind the spoilers BUT there is no guarantee if its a more minor element that it will even be included in the plot summary. I dont think Ill quite go to those lengths, but I do appreciate a heads-up from my friends and I do keep my ears open for any potential "trigger warnings".

I asked on my Facebook page about any other movies, books, or television shows that have pregnancy or infant loss and for you, dear readers, here are some other trigger warnings:

(many episodes of) Call the Midwife, House M.D. and Law & Order SVU
Up
Graceland
Labor Day
What to Expect When Youre Expecting

Feel free to leave any youve encountered in the comments as a trigger warning to others.

weight loss journey after pregnancy | For the Mother Who Knows Loss A Giveaway

weight loss journey after pregnancy

Mothers Day is coming up. Its often a difficult day for those who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss, even if you have other children or its been many years. So I wanted to host a Mothers Day giveaway specifically for those mothers who have lost babies.

Jenna of Call Her Happy makes lovely embroidered necklaces. I have several and they are the source of so much beauty, and many compliments. She recently mentioned that she is taking orders for personalized mothers necklaces, with a pink rosette for each daughter and a blue rosette for each son.

I thought the necklace was just beautiful at it would be easy to incorporate the children we had lost as well. Since Im currently pregnant and we dont know (nor will we find out until birth) the sex of our baby, Ill have to wait to get mine, but I look forward to ordering one from Jenna with a pink rosette for Lucia, a pink or blue for baby, and four little yellow rosettes for the little ones weve lost.

I am giving one of these lovely mothers rosette necklaces away to a mom who has lost a baby. The giveaway will end Saturday, May 2nd so I have time to contact the winner and have Jenna personalize the necklace for in time for a Mothers Day arrival.

UPDATE: Allison Kinyon, who sells beautiful handmade rosaries in her Etsy shop, Rosaries by Allison, offered to include a beautiful pocket rosary with light rose, light sapphire, and crystal Swarovski round beads and Madonna & Child center. There are more entries on the Rafflecopter to reflect this addition.

Since I sell Lilla Rose hair accessories, Im also going to throw in a Lilla Rose accessory of the winners choice ($16 or under).

The giveaway is only open to mothers who have lost children, so please dont enter if this does not describe you. Open worldwide.

baby losing weight in womb | A lovely gift for a friend after loss giveaway

baby losing weight in womb

A few weeks ago, an email popped into my inbox from the Happy Mommy Box that introducing the themed boxes they offer. Happy Mommy Boxes are meant to be encouragement for moms and make especially great gifts for a mom friend who needs a little special surprise to brighten her day. I had seen the boxes before (and obviously signed up for email updates); they were filled with fun little surprises - mugs or bags with encouraging quotes, jewelry or hair ties, etc. In essence, things that are fun to open, pretty to look at, and let you know that the sender wanted to encourage and inspire you in your vocation of motherhood.

So, I opened the email expecting to see more of that. And I did. But I was also shocked, and more that a bit touched, to see that one of the boxes offered was a Grief and Loss Themed Box. Its not often (or maybe ever?) that Ive seen a company geared toward moms that is inclusive of moms who have experienced loss. When searching for pregnancy loss gifts in the past, Ive only seen them sold through companies (mostly small etsy businesses) geared directly toward pregnancy loss. So just the fact that this box even exists sets Happy Mommy Box apart.

The little gifts and cards Ive received after my losses have meant so very much to me. Just knowing that someone is thinking about me and understands the depths of my loss is so helpful to the grieving process. So many times, women feel very alone after a loss. Receiving a carefully picked gift in the mail is such a blessing. But its often hard, especially if you have not experienced loss on your own, to know what to send. The Grief and Loss Themed Box takes the guesswork out of the gift and puts together some very thoughtful items:

"You are my beloved" print. Something lovely to hang in your home to remember that even during the darkest times, you are loved.

"Bind my wandering hear to thee" journal. A place to write down your thoughts and prayers, hopes and fears, anger and sadness.

Psalm 34:18 hand stamped necklace. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." What a perfect scripture passage to remember that the Lord is near.

Elastic headbands. A little something pretty is especially helpful when you dont have the energy to care for yourself and feel worn down spiritually.

I think this box would make the most lovely gift for someone who has recently lost a baby. My only concern is that maybe the "Happy Mommy Box" packaging might be a sting at first, especially if she has no other living children.. But Im sure once she opened it, she wouldnt mind anymore because the gifts inside are not for the "happy mommy" but perfectly curated for the grieving mother.

Each of the items in the box are available for individual purchase if you did not want to send an entire box, and you can also make a customized box from mixing and matching the items available. (Its much cheaper to buy items in a box than individually if youre planning to buy a few items.)

After seeing the Grief and Loss Box, I contacted Happy Mommy Box to see if they would be willing to give away a box to one of my readers. And they said yes! Use the Rafflecopter below to enter. Open to residents of the US and Canada. PLEASE, Im asking that you only enter if either you have lost a baby yourself or, if you win, you plan to have the box sent to a friend who has lost a baby.  Thank you!

pregnancy weight loss in first trimester | On Loss and Marriage

pregnancy weight loss in first trimester

A couple weekends ago, my husband and I headed up to the mountains for our fifth anniversary. It was our first getaway as a couple since our honeymoon. It was perfect. We stayed at a darling bed and breakfast, ate way too much good food, and did not much else. Throughout the weekend, I constantly came back to the thought that this was really, really good for us. Its important for all married couples to have times of relaxation and enjoyment together, but it struck me as especially needed for a couple who has undergone difficult emotional trauma.

Couples who have gone through the loss of a child (pregnancy loss included) have a much higher divorce rate for a reason. After our second loss, I found myself utterly surprised by how altered our marriage had become. I found myself avoiding my husband because he had become a reminder of the pain of our losses. I couldnt even look at him without the sharp reminder of the babies we lost. There was a part of me to felt that it would be easier if we were no longer together, if I no longer had him around as a constant reminder. If we went our separate ways, it would would be so much easier to pretend our losses never existed, and without that constant reminder, then maybe the pain would be a little less.

These were all fleeting thoughts, of course, nothing I ever dwelt on. And they were most certainly lies. The pain of separating from my husband, the only person who knew and loved the children we lost as intimately as I did, would have only brought more pain to our losses. (Not to mention the pain it would bring to our living child, to our families, and to every other aspect of our lives.) No matter how much I tried, no matter what lengths I would have gone through, it would have been futile to try to ignore the pain of our losses anyway; its much healthier to confront and heal that pain and we could only truly do that together.

When I think of the short lives of four miscarried children, I want them to have meaning. I want them to, despite the pain of loss, bring good into the world and that starts right here with their family. What good would come from their short lives and deaths if they put a wedge between their parents?

Looking back at the most difficult points of our marriage after loss, its so very clear how Satan uses our times of pain and weakness. Christian marriages are reflection of the beauty and goodness of God. The procreative aspect of those marriages is a very visible sign to the world of power of love. When something goes wrong with the life-giving element of marriage (be it infertility or loss), doubts creep in as to the validity of the marriage, or if not the validity at least the value.

And then there is the guilt. One member of the couple usually feels all the weight and blame of loss and fertility issues. Even when there is no no firm diagnosis, the woman usually pulls the guilt upon herself. Its hard to bridge that gap, to feel like infertility/loss is happening go both of you together instead of one of you pushing it upon the other. Its easy to believe that you are at fault, preventing your partner from having the children they deserve, wondering if he isnt better off with someone else who can give him living children. Humans are bodies and souls and as much as wed like to separate our spiritual life, the brokenness of the body can often lead to brokenness in the soul.

Four losses in less than a year and a half. Surgery. Another pregnancy. I wish I could say that this pregnancy has helped to heal our wounds, and Im still hopeful that after the birth of our child the healing will come, but so far its only seemed to deepen them. Or at least call attention to them in a way that is no longer possible to ignore. The wounds are still there, but our approach is different. Were no longer pulling away from each other, but turning toward one another in our sorrow. We grieve differently, my husband more stoic and silent, my tears and pain more visible and vocal, but instead of letting those differences pull us apart, were learning to care for each others individual needs. I feel guilty that my body failed to nurture our children, David feels helpless as he watches me continue to go through trauma he would do anything to relieve. Together were working on finding other fruits and creative outlets for our marriage, so that its value doesnt hinge solely on our fertility.

As we sat up in our room the mountains, we talked about our favorite moments and the blessings of our first five years of marriage. The conversation was more somber than we would have ever expected it to be. Between mentioning milestones and cherished memories, there were long pauses where we silently thought about the sorrows and struggles which, at least numerically, outnumber the hallmark moments. But reflecting on those difficult times gave us the ability to rejoice in the strength and durability of our marriage, the flexibility wed found and the lessons weve learned. We understood the importance of leaving room in for God (and for heartache and tragedy and time to rebuild) in our future goals, of setting priorities instead of milestones, and thinking eternally,

pregnancy weight loss meal plan | LARABAR GIVEAWAY Eat Healthy Get Outside

pregnancy weight loss meal plan

As we draw closer to the end of the year and towards the holidays and cold weather where we just want to bundle up and stay inside, I'm reminded that I don't want to slack off now and lose the fitness level that I worked so hard to achieve earlier this year.  It's so hard to get in shape, but so easy to get out of shape! I'm definitely going to enjoy myself and won't be sticking to a rigid routine these next couple months, but I plan to continue to exercise and eat healthy because I want to take care of myself and feel good.  As part of my daily meals, I typically eat a LÄRABAR each afternoon as that's about the time I'm hungry and heading out the door to get my son from school.  I'm never without them, because my son likes them too (as picky as he is), so there is always a LÄRABAR in my purse, gym bag, or car.  Do you do that too?  If you've ever been out and about, starving and grouchy, with equally grouchy and starving kids, you probably do.

November 17 is National Take a Hike Day and if you need a bit of fuel before or after your walk, a LÄRABAR is the perfect thing for you.  I love that LÄRABAR is actually made by a real woman named Lara, who, in 2000, found herself hungry after a hike and created a natural food full of wholesome ingredients like fruit and nuts to give her a tasty healthy snack to fuel her active lifestyle.  Lara has a passion for natural foods (each LÄRABAR has no more than 9 ingredients, is gluten-free, non GMO, kosher, and most of the products are soy-free, dairy free and vegan).  There are so many flavors to choose from.  I'm a big fan of the chocolate and peanut butter flavors, but I know other people who prefer the fruity ones.

baby weight loss in first week | HUGE Pregnancy After Loss Giveaway!

baby weight loss in first week

A pregnancy after loss is a trying time, fraught with fear and uncertainty, having lost some of the innocence and excitement of a happy and healthy pregnancy without a history of loss. Unfortunately, very few seem to recognize how difficult it is for moms pregnant again after one or many losses. Its often assumed that our pregnancies will be blissful because were so excited to be blessed with viable pregnancies, but thats just not the case. In many situations, we feel guilty for resenting the morning sickness and any pain or complications because shouldnt we just be happy that our baby is alive this time? Often, were still mourning the babies we lost and while the outside world assumes a new baby will heal us or replace the babies we lost, pregnancy just makes the pain even more acute. Pregnancy after loss is complicated.

Ive run a few giveaways in the past for moms who have experienced loss but I wanted to run a special giveaway right now especially for moms who are currently pregnant after a loss. Ive partnered with some very sweet and generous women who run small businesses to give you a great giveaway with items for baby and mom. Im so very, very excited about this giveaway and I hope you are too. Please take the time to visit, follow, and make purchases from the ladies who contributed to the giveaway. Its their kind hearts that have made this giveaway possible.

At the bottom of the page, you can enter the giveaway. (US residents only please.) I ask that only women who are currently pregnant after a loss enter. (Your last pregnancy need not be a loss, I dont have experience in this area yet, but I imagine even after having a living child, subsequent pregnancies will still be hard with my history of loss. If youve ever had a loss and are currently pregnant, please do enter.) I know that that significantly limits the pool of entrants, so even if you cant enter, would you please share this giveaway with others?

And on to the wonderful prizes! One winner will take them all home.

baby weight loss chart | AllWhites Egg Whites for Lean Protein 100 Visa Gift Card GIVEAWAY

baby weight loss chart

Im a big fan of AllWhites® egg whites (100% egg whites that come in a carton) and use them in my protein pancakes and meals all the time.  If you came to my house and peeked into my fridge, youd always see at least one container of AllWhites.  If you follow my blog, you know Im working on getting lean and gaining muscle, which requires eating about 5 small meals a day, each with about 20 grams of protein.  AllWhites helps me get that protein in!

Each serving of AllWhites has 5 grams of lean protein and 25 calories without fat or cholesterol or shells!  If you are on Weight Watchers, they give AllWhites 0 PointsPlus value per serving (PointsPlus value takes into account the food’s protein, carbohydrates, fat and fiber).  You can use AllWhites in any recipe that calls for eggs.  The convenience of simply pouring the AllWhites into your recipe as opposed to having to crack and separate your eggs yolks from the whites is genius!
Today, Im sharing a healthy recipe using AllWhites and GIVING AWAY a $100 Visa gift card to one lucky reader (courtesy of AllWhites)!

Egg Scramble

I call this dish "egg scramble" because I like to simply dump all the ingredients into a hot skillet and "scramble" them around until they are all cooked.  I usually eat this on a weekend for breakfast, or at night for my last meal.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • AllWhites® egg whites - about 3/4 cup
  • Onion- 1/4 cup chopped or less
  • Turkey ham - 1 slice, chopped
  • Cherry tomatoes- 5 or as many as you like
  • Spinach- large handful
  • Low fat cheese- 1 slice
  • Mushrooms - 1/2 cup (optional)
Directions

Spray cooking spray in a skillet over medium-high heat, add a small chopped slice of turkey ham, bit of diced onion, a few cherry tomatoes, and a bunch of spinach.  After the spinach cooks down a little, and the rest of the ingredients are browned, I add about 3/4 cup of AllWhites (depending on how hungry I am).  I just keep stirring until its all cooked, then, turn off the heat and add some low fat cheese.  Mushrooms would be good in this too.

For recipe purposes:

3 tbsp. of AllWhites = Approx. 1 large egg
1/3 cup of AllWhites = Approx. 2 large eggs
3/4 cup of AllWhites = Approx. 4 large eggs

AllWhites are sold in regular grocery stores, right next to the eggs.  The cartons look like the photo below if you arent familiar.  They last a while in the fridge.

weight loss in pregnancy 2nd trimester | Our Francis

weight loss in pregnancy 2nd trimester

One year ago today was our Francis Michaels due date. Which means had our baby lived, wed be celebrating a first birthday around now. Im so far removed from that alternate reality that I cant really imagine what it would be like having a one year old crawling (or walking!) around. I cant imagine where I crib would fit in our little home or what it would be like to have another car seat in our car. I cant begin to see how Francis would have fit into our lives, yet its easy to feel that there is someone missing.

Of all the children weve lost, I always miss Francis the most. Its not that we love that baby any more than the others, just that we bonded with him or her so much more. Between my positive pregnancy test and miscarriage, we had six weeks of dreaming and preparing for our baby. That time was never tainted with a fear of loss, so we were able to love our baby with abandon. And those six weeks came after a year of desperately wanting another child, even before we were able to try to conceive again, a year of dreaming and preparing in itself.

After Francis, we were much more cautious with our pregnancies, much more reserved. And we never got much time with them, no more than two weeks between a positive pregnancy test and an ultrasound showing that miscarriage was likely. We never had the time to allow ourselves to imagine our baby outside of the womb, as part of our living family.  Even now, at 14 weeks pregnant, I cant visualize what it will be like to have a baby in November, even if I give myself the permission to try. But during my pregnancy with Francis, I could visualize that sweet baby in my arms - that tiny little nose, big blue eyes, kissable lips, and chubby, chubby thighs.

Today, David has to work, but were hoping to spend tomorrow exactly like we did last year - a trip to the cemetery and then to the beach. (Please pray that the storm that is supposed to hit this weekend disperses! It means so much to use that were able to carry out this family tradition.) Only a few weeks away from our move, this will be the last time well see our babys grave and the last time we carry out this family tradition. We usually only visit Francis Michaels grave twice a year (close to the due date and miscarriage date) but the thought of leaving it is unbearable. We didnt bury any of our other children (none of them ever developed bodies, just empty sacs) so in many ways, this one grave represents them all. I know their souls arent there but I still feel like a mother abandoning her children.

My sweet Francis Michael, know that you are loved and so very missed.  What I wouldnt have given to have held you in my arms for just a moment, to have known what you looked like.

Past posts Ive written about Francis:

This is not the post it was supposed to be.

after pregnancy weight loss tips in hindi | Laparoscopy Surgery for Endometriosis

after pregnancy weight loss tips in hindi

A few weeks ago, I received a request to share more about the laparoscopy I had in January.  When I was preparing for surgery, I searched the internet for blog posts about the procedure so I could get an accurate picture of what recovery would be like (and line up appropriate help). So I figured it might be useful if I shared my experiences as a blog post so that others could read it as well.

My surgery:
My laparoscopy was scheduled as an exploratory surgery.  My cycles didnt show much in the way of endometriosis symptoms, but since I had had recurrent pregnancy loss that didnt seem to have other explanations (I did have low progesterone but was on progesterone shots for two of my pregnancies and still miscarried), my doctor thought there was a good chance that I did indeed have endometriosis. According to the NaPro Technology website, "In women with repetitive miscarriage, 85% will have endometriosis." The link between miscarriage and endometriosis hasnt been well researched, but its suggested that the endometriosis causes inflammation, which interferes with implantation. Anyway, since we were running out of testing options, the laparoscopy was really our next step. (UPDATE: This topic seems to finally be getting some attention! A recent study in Scotland showed that "women with endometriosis are at an increased risk of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. The research further found that women with a history of endometriosis whose pregnancies progressed beyond 24 weeks were found to be at a higher than average risk of complications, including haemorrhage (ante- and postpartum) and preterm birth.")

In addition to the laparoscopy, I was also scheduled for a hysteroscopy (a scope is inserted up the vagina to look at cervix and inside of the uterus) to check for scarring, polyps or other irregularity inside my uterus and for dye to be pushed through my fallopian tubes to clear them if they were blocked (I dont think it was actually a hysterosalpingogram since I dont think that x-rays were taken during the process, but maybe they were?). My fallopian tubes were clear and my uterus looked perfectly normal.

Since it was an exploratory surgery, I didnt know what to expect going in since I wasnt sure what would be found. My doctor planned to remove any endometriosis that he saw the length of the surgery (and recovery) would depend on the extent of endometriosis present. If none was found, I would only have one small incision in my belly button. As it turns out, I did have extensive endometriosis, which caused some of my organs to adhere to one another, and an endometrioma (a cyst of endometrial tissue) on one ovary. I ended up with three incision, one in my belly button and one on each side close to my hip bones. Each is less than a half inch long. The surgery took about 2 hours.

What exactly is a laparoscopy?
I realized after my surgery that most of my family and friends didnt realize exactly what happened during my surgery. They seemed to think that the endometriosis was removed from the inside of my uterus. That is not the case. Endometrial tissue is supposed to be on the inside of the uterus. During a womans cycle, the endometrium in her uterus builds up, providing, in essence, a cushion in which a fertilized egg can implant. If no pregnancy occurs, the endometrium leaves the body (menstruation). This is normal and healthy. Endometriosis occurs when endometrial tissue is located outside of the uterus (the reason why this occurs is still unknown, though there are a few theories) on various organs and ligaments in the abdominal cavity, which often causes them to adhere together.

Therefore, surgery to look for/remove endometriosis occurs outside the uterus in the abdominal cavity. A small incision is made in the abdomen and a scope is inserted to look around the abdominal cavity. If endometriosis (or anything else) is found and needs to be removed, its usually done through that small incision and/or a few others, though sometimes bigger incisions are necessary. Gas is pumped into the abdominal cavity so that the doctor has space to look at the organs and perform the necessary excision/cauterization of endometrial tissue.

Preparation:
Here are a few of the things that I did to prepare for surgery that I would suggest someone else does --
  • Lined up someone to care for my daughter during the surgery and afterward. A family friend took care of Lucia the day of and my mom flew out the next day to stay with us for a week. If my mom didnt come out, it would have been nice to have a meal train set up in addition to child care for Lucia for the following week. (Or a house stocked full of easy to make items, like yogurts, soups I just had to heat up, and takeout menus.) I probably could have survived alone with Lucia after the first four or five days or so, but having a full week and a half of rest made sure that I didnt overdo it. And, from what Ive read, recovery can vary widely, so it was quite possible that my recovery could have been slower. Having help lined up for longer than needed is much less of a problem than not having help for long enough.
  • Had Gas-X and a heating pad at the ready. Before my surgery, I repeatedly read that the main source of pain after a laparoscopy was not the incisions but the gas that was pumped into the abdominal cavity. This gas usually collects in the shoulders and neck when you sit/stand and can be very uncomfortable. A heating pad and Gas-X are said to help. I didnt actually have much of this pain (my doctor said he was able to get most of the gas out after the procedure) but I was glad I had these on hand just in case and did use them minimally the first few days.
  • Made sure I had an appropriate wardrobe. Because of the gas (ie bloating) and location of incisions, wearing jeans isnt comfortable for a while. I was able to fit into regular jeans pretty quickly (other women reported it being a few weeks until bloating went down though), but the waist band rubbed against my sore incisions. Skirts and paints with stretchy/jersey waistbands were necessary for the first 1-2 weeks for me. I went through the clothes I had to make sure I had at least a few options to wear. I did, but had that not been the case, I would have shopped some thrift stores so get enough bottoms to last me between laundry loads.
  • Prepared things to do while recovering. The first few days were hard to read because of the pain medication, so I knitted and watched some Netflix shows Id been wanting to watch but saved up specifically for after surgery. My sister-in-law sent me a few new books Id been wanting to read, so that was helpful to pass the time after the first few days. You are supposed to get up and walk around to help you heal, so youre not on bed rest, but I was very tired and in bed resting much more than usual.
  • Followed the hospital rules. Im sure this goes without saying, but I followed the directions given to me at my pre-op appointment to a T. Not just the obvious things like no food or drink after midnight (if I had to do it again, I would have had several glasses of water the night before because I felt SO dehydrated all morning before my surgery), but also the light meal the night before, etc.
Recovery:
When I read other blog posts and asked other women whod had this surgery about their recovery time, I found a wide range from from only a few days to six weeks. Mine fell on the shorter end. It took me a good two weeks to feel 90% and about a month before I was back to 100%, but after about 4 days, the initial pain and weakness was gone. (As someone mentioned, I conceived less than two weeks after the surgery, so recovery couldnt have been too awful.) I had the surgery on a Friday and was back to caring for Lucia single-handedly during the day on the Monday a week and a half later. I would have loved a few extra days of rest during the day because I was still tired and moved a bit slow, but I survived just fine. I wouldnt suggest someone go back to a physical job that quickly, but a desk job I could have managed.

I only needed the prescription pain medication for the two days after the surgery, then I switched to over-the-counter ibuprofen. I only took that for a few more days as needed (not all day long) and stopped taking any pain medication about 4 days after the surgery. After that point, most of the pain was related to quick abdominal movements (like sitting up in bed quickly, forgetting that I had just had surgery - ouch) or accidentally bumping my incisions.

Trying Again:
Though not everyone has endometriosis removed to conceive, many do, so I thought I would mention this piece real quick. My doctor usually does laparoscopies during the first half of his patients cycles so that they can start trying to conceive the very same cycle. Other women I talked to said their doctors told them to wait 1-2 full cycles after their surgery before trying to conceive. So there isnt a set amount of time. My doctor encourages trying right away because endometriosis often returns so often the chances concept decrease over time as the endometriosis returns and spreads.

Of course, regardless of what my doctor said, it was up to David and me to make our own decision about how long we wanted to wait. The surgery didnt delay ovulation like I figured it would  (it did affect my mucus buildup, but peak was on the same day it is almost every cycle), so I actually ovulated much closer to the surgery than I expected. Since I was feeling up to *ahem* relations, we decided to try right away, in part because it usually took us several months to get pregnant. Apparently, with the endometriosis gone, we get pregnant much quicker because we conceived right away, which we did not expect at all. (Though it makes sense - after my surgery, my doctor said he was surprised Id been able to get pregnant at all in the past few years because of the extent of the endometriosis.) Thankfully, I already felt fully recovered from the surgery by the time I got a positive pregnancy test and before I had any pregnancy symptoms.
