When I was pregnant with Jack, we hiked quite a bit: Walls of Jericho, Mount Tom,  Mount Washington, DeSoto State Park and Cloudland Canyon. 

Hiking during this pregnancy has been a bit more of a challenge due to winter weather, all of us being sick at various times and Daniels crazy work schedule (hes been working 12-15 hour shifts with no days off).

Earlier this year we did a quick hike to Rainbow Lake and yesterday we embraced the sunshine and took Jack to Green Gorge Park behind our house. 

The last time we visited Green Gorge was a year ago and I was actually in the early stages of pregnancy before I miscarried. Its been a long year.

Anyways, it was a blessing to have Daniel home all weekend and the sunshine was calling our names, so we did a short 1-mile walk in the woods with Jack. 

I am so proud of our little guy, he walked until we were almost done.

He had a blast balancing on rocks at various cross water crossings, blazing his own trail, being the leader and stomping int he mud.

Every time we stopped, he wanted to know if we were going to have a picnic. Next time we will have to remember to bring snacks.

His favorite thing was crossing the swing bridge. Which translated to us crossing the "wobbly bridge" multiple times.

I am so thankful that he enjoys the activities that we enjoy and we look forward to more hikes after baby #2 gets here.

I have been making great efforts to get outside with our boys, daily. Yesterday Jack requested we go to one our local parks.

It was 42º and, even though it was sunny, we were the only people there. Jack enlisted me to play Octonauts with him – Jack was Kwazi and I was Captain Barnacles and we were saving fish in the sea from danger. This game lasted until a set of twins arrived. Then the game changed to children fending off bad guys with their swords.

The play was loud and rambunctious and what you would expect of four year olds. Climbing and jumping, and perhaps some pushing and shoving as well.

As they played, the care taker of the twins mentioned to me that the two children in her care had lost their father just last week. She only told me because the twins are 4 years old and they had been telling people that their daddy was in heaven. She wanted me to be prepared in case they told Jack.

The children did not tell Jack, but my heart ached for them just the same. I ache for their mother and their older siblings, who I am sure are still feeling the sting of such unexpected loss.

Im glad that Jack could be a distraction for these new friends, if only for day. Im still turning it over in my head. Tell your loved ones you love them. Every. Single. Day. We have no promise of tomorrow.

When I was in college I lived in an all-girls dorm. One custom of where I lived was that on special occasions (especially Valentines Day) the front desks in the dorm lobbies would be overflowing with special deliveries of flowers from girls boyfriends.

Every special holiday I would trudge by the front desk of my dorm, head down, trying to ignore what I knew wouldnt be there for me. I didnt have a boyfriend for most of my college experience and when Daniel and I started dating, he didnt realize that a show of flowers (at the lobby desk) might be important to me. To be fair, I never told him.

After we were married, one of my aunts told me that one secret to a happy marriage was to let your spouse know your expectations upfront. If flowers or presents are important, you need to communicate that (beforehand). In truth, I dont really care about flowers or gifts – maybe I conditioned myself to not care all of those years ago. In fact, Daniel and I have always had a no gift policy (though I have asked him to give me flowers for special occasions).

Ironically, all of these years later, I finally have a boy in my life who loves to give me flowers just because. Don’t get me wrong, Daniel gives me flowers at special times throughout the year and he is the one that told Jack that they should buy flowers for me because they love me, but Jack loves to give me flowers all of the time regardless of whether or not there is a special occasion to celebrate.

The first time, Jack helped Daniel pick out flowers for me for Easter this year. It was a sweet surprise. He was very excited to tell me that they bought me flowers because they love me. The second time, he picked out flowers with his Nana’s help to give to me when I came home from the hospital with Isaac. Then more recently, while grocery shopping with me he insisted that he pick out flowers for me.

I really do love these little gifts of flowers. Even better are the flowers (weeds) that he picks from our yard. He insists on filling a vase with water and putting the vase on the counter. He is so proud of this accomplishment and it makes my heart feel like it will explode. 

So I didn’t get flowers in the lobby while in college, but I have a husband of almost 13 years who loves me and listens to my request for flowers throughout the year. And on top of that, I have a little boy who loves to give me flowers just because his daddy told him that is one way they can show that they love me.

A couple of days late... sorry kid, youre the second!

Currently Isaac is scooting backwards, but still not crawling forward. This gets him in trouble as he scoots himself under the couch and then gets frustrated. He easily moves from a seated position to all fours, but hasnt mastered pushing forward yet. Really, he just wants to stand...

It seems that he is determined to stand and cruise before crawling forward. Every time we hold him, he turns around and slides off of our laps onto the floor and holds the side of the couch. He really wants to start cruising, but hasnt figured out how to move his feet.

On the sleep front, I thought that we had finally turned a corner when he slept 9 hours straight at night, two nights in a row. But now that he is moving, he is in a regression stage. The problem is that he wakes up, scoots himself into a corner of his crib and then cant figure out how to move forward again. I know this is just a phase, but it is so hard to be losing sleep.

This past month he suddenly figured out how to eat solid foods. We do baby lead weaning and have introduced really soft solids all along, but during the last month he just seemed to get it. And he LOVES food. We just give him small bites of everything we eat and he devours it.

I briefly tried baby food (just to see if the convenience might help when we are away from home) but he makes the most hilarious faces and seems to hate it (who wouldnt when you have had real food) and his diapers are basically blow outs every time I try pureed baby food. If we werent sure before, we are now, solids are the way to go for our family.

Isaac is at a stage where he loves to make spitting noise with his mouth. His Grandma Esther says the Spanish phrase for this is "trompeta" or to trumpet. I dont think there is an English equivalent, but it is a perfect phrase. Also, like his big brother at this age, his tongue is almost always sticking out.

In addition to spitting sounds, Isaac is babbling up a storm. He seems very determined to talk. His main sound continues to be "dada." But one day Daniel came home from work and Isaac was in his high chair and he said as clear as day, "Hi." Were not sure if he meant to say that, but it was pretty clear to both of us and a vast majority of the sounds he makes are of the "da" variety.

According to Daniel, Isaacs individual development plan (IDP in work language) is to walk, talk and eat us out of house and home.

 

Like most little ones Isaac loves cords, cell phones and remotes. He seems to be moving past the phase of just putting them in his mouth to an actual curiosity of how they function. When I try to hide said items, he no longer accepts that they have "disappeared" instead he hunts until he finds them.

In the past month, his list of firsts include: first trip to the mountains, first Christmas, first New Year, and first bath in the big tub with his older brother.

 

End of month stats:  

Weight: As of today and he is 25 lbs.
Clothes: He has been in size 12 month clothes for awhile and size 5 diapers whenever we use disposable.

Foods: We are continuing to introduce lots of different foods, daily. 

Words/Sounds: So many different sounds at this phase. 

Movement: Scooting backwards and trying to stand. Baby proofing is a priority.
Hair: A decent amount and right now it is blond.

Teeth: Two on top and two on bottom, possibly teething.

On Saturday night we headed over to Daniels dads house for supper. When we got there, Jacks Grandpa and Grandma had a surprise for him – a new-to-him Powerwheels car that the other grandkids had outgrown. Unfortunately the battery was dead.

This did not deter Jack from insisting that it could get charged, and when that didnt work, that his daddy could fix the "babbery."

 

So after dinner, we took the Powerwheels home. We had recently put the second carseat base in the Subaru, so the Powerwheels had to go in the roof basket – it was just the right size.

Sunday morning Jack woke up and had not forgotten about the car. He insisted they fix it as soon as we were all up.

To start, Jack and Daniel used a voltage meter to assess whether the battery was really dead before removing it from the vehicle. Daniel also spent time dreaming up ways he could make the car more powerful and faster. I believe he even mentioned the idea of adding better tires and even a winch to it.

Jack would be happy just to have a car that goes. Maybe in a year or two he will be more interested in improving the car.

Once the car was working again, Jack (and probably Daniel) were excited to find out that the car had two gears – fast and slow – as well as reverse. 

Jack has enjoyed driving it up and down our steep driveway and to the park across the street. The car has seats for two, so this is something that baby 2 will be able to enjoy as well.
