weight loss after pregnancy how long | Its not jealousy

weight loss after pregnancy how long

This post originally appeared on my now defunct blog on February 20, 2014, while I was waiting to for my second miscarriage to begin.  After two more miscarriages, Ive been thinking a lot about my relationship with friends and family who are pregnant or have babies.  Its hard.  So hard.  I hate that I cry when I hear pregnancy announcements or simply a mention of pregnancy or babies.  I hate that I cant put my feelings aside and feel only joy for the expectant parents.  I struggle to hate only these feelings and not myself for having them, so this post was good for me to reread. The thoughts and feelings I put in this post are still as true after my fourth miscarriage as they were after my first.

Before I got pregnant with Lucia, seeing pregnancy announcements or bump photos or babies was hard.  That was jealousy.  I wanted to have a baby and begrudged those who either were in the position to have a baby (married, out of school, stable job, whatever) when I wasnt or those who had babies even though their positions were less than desirable.  In fact, I cant say that I could even feel happy for those who were having babies while I was not.  All I could see was myself - my desires, my fears, my anger, my hurt, my jealousy.  I wanted what they had and if I couldnt have it, I didnt want them to have it either.  I dont feel good about admitting that.  Those feelings came from a less than charitable place.  That jealousy was sinful and soul-eating.

After my miscarriages, its often very, very hard to see pregnancy announcements or bump photos or babies.  But its not jealousy.  In fact, my feelings have very little, if nothing, to do with the women who are making those announcements or in those pictures or holding those babies.  For them, I feel happiness.  I feel joy at the beauty of new life.  Having Lucia, I know the immense blessings of motherhood and I am so happy that other women get to experience it.  I truly wish motherhood was available to all who desired it; infertility breaks my heart and I cannot begin to imagine the pain carried by the women who suffer from it.

The reason these things cause me pain is not because of jealousy.  No, I do not begrudge other women their babies.  And I dont want their babies for myself.  I want my babies.  The ones I lost.  The unique human beings that I carried in my womb.  They have their own souls, their own personalities.  Their own DNA.  They cannot be exchanged for anothers child.  Those announcements and pictures and sweet little babies simply remind me of what I lost.  What I can never have.  Even if I get pregnant again and the child makes it to birth and I get to hold that baby in my arms and I get to hug and kiss and raise it, that baby will not replace the ones Ive lost.

And I imagine if the day does come when I get to birth another baby, that too will cause me pain.  That too will be a reminder of the moments that Ill never have with two of my children.  And it doesnt mean Ill love that child less or that that child herself will be the cause of my pain.  Again, the feeling will have little to do with her.  For her, I will feel joy and love and the million other complex emotions that come with motherhood.  But it will still be a reminder of what once was and what could have been.

One of the most important things Ive done for myself in this healing process has been to acknowledge that these feelings are not bad.  Unlike the jealousy I felt years ago, these feelings dont come from sin.  These feelings come from grief, loss, pain.  They are not cruel or angry or hurtful.  They simply are.  I know not all women whove had miscarriages struggle with pregnancy announcements or visiting new babies.  We all grieve in our own unique ways.  But I do struggle.  And thats ok.

Not all pregnancy announcements bother me, nor do all newborns.  Ive had several friends announce pregnancies or have babies since my miscarriage in October and I was unaffected by the news.  The most difficult reminders have been the ones that are the most obvious reminders - those who have due dates similar to mine.  Watching their bellies grow throughout pregnancy is kind of like watching the ghost of my pregnancy.  What would have been.  What will never be.  I imagine as we near my due date and those babies are born, it will become even harder.  I often wonder if Ill see those children five, ten, fifteen years down the road and still feel sadness, still imagine what would have been, still try to imagine how my child would have been similar or different.  Only time will tell.

In addition to acknowledging that these feelings are ok, Ive also allowed myself to block the reminders that have caused me pain, at least for a time.  Ive unfollowed the blogs of women who are due within a month of my due date and hidden friends from my Facebook newsfeed for the same reason.  Ive left groups where pregnancy talk was too difficult to bear.  At times, Ive left Facebook and stopped reading blogs altogether for a period.  At first, I felt that I was allowing myself to be weak.  Or letting my weakness rule me.  Now Im starting to realize that we need to honor our feelings and protect ourselves.  Maybe it is weak to not be able to see cute bump photos.  Weak or not, right now, thats what I need.  I know it wont be forever.

Im coming up on a difficult time - one of the pains of miscarrying so early in a pregnancy is that as a general rule, people dont announce pregnancies that early.  So in a few weeks, Ill start seeing announcements that correspond to my due date.  And not long after that, the due date of my first miscarriage will be here.  And if it ends up being too much, Im not going to force myself to be strong.  Im going to turn off my computer and let myself cry.

Right now, Im facing my first close friend/family member with a due date close to mine and the feeling are even more raw and the pregnancy impossible to ignore (and I dont want to ignore it anyway). I cant just turn off my computer anymore. The pregnancy is right in front of me as will be the baby. Im struggling to not let the sadness of our loss overwhelm the joy I feel for our new little family member.

On top of that, with the number of losses mounting, it seems like there is a difficult date around every corner. February - first anniversary of our second miscarriage; May - first anniversary of our first miscarried childs due date (when our Francis would be turning one!); June - due date of our third miscarried child, Adrienne; July - due date of our fourth miscarried child, Christian; September - first anniversary of our second miscarried childs due date (when Julian would be turning one). There are other dates in there too - dates we conceived and when we got positive pregnancy tests and, for two of our babies, the days we found out they were no longer alive in an ultrasound. Those dates are imprinted in my mind, but for now, Im trying to only remember miscarriage and due dates. Its too much of a burden when Im trying so very, very hard to focus on the future in a positive way and stop longing for the What Might Have Beens.

weight loss goals after pregnancy | Multigrain Buttermilk Pancakes

weight loss goals after pregnancy

Please join me in welcoming back Honey Were Healthy contributor Jennifer of The Chronicles of Home.  She never disappoints with her recipes and today is no different.  As you know, we love pancakes around here, and today Jennifer is sharing how she makes multigrain buttermilk pancakes.  Enjoy!

Multigrain Buttermilk Pancakes

Buttermilk pancakes are sort of the gold standard when it comes to pancakes.  When youre looking for a fluffy, pillowy, nostalgically good pancake, buttermilk is the way you want to go.

Classic buttermilk pancakes, however, while delicious, dont have a whole lot of redeeming health qualities.  Theyre usually made with white flour and white sugar and will probably leave you hungry again in a few hours.

This multigrain version of a classic buttermilk pancake includes whole wheat flour, cornmeal, oats, and flax seed meal.  It swaps honey for most of the white sugar as well.  You can expect a fluffy, lightly sweet pancake with a bit more tooth and heartiness to it than a traditional buttermilk pancake.  For me, its the perfect mix of classic and healthy.

Ingredients
1 c. whole wheat flour
3/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/3 c. whole cornmeal
1/4 c. old fashioned oats
1/4 c. flax seed meal
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1 3/4 c. buttermilk at room temperature
4 tbsp. grapeseed oil
1/4 c. honey
3 eggs at room temperature

*To bring buttermilk to room temperature microwave it for 20-30 seconds in a glass measuring cup.  To bring eggs to room temperature, let them sit in their shells in a bowl of hot tap water while you prep the other ingredients.

Heat a griddle or nonstick frying pan over medium heat.

Whisk all of the dry ingredients in a large bowl to blend.

In a separate bowl, whisk the buttermilk, grapeseed oil, honey, and eggs until combined.

Pour the wet ingredients over the dry and fold with a rubber spatula until just combined.  The batter should be a bit lumpy.

Spoon several tablespoons of batter in four puddles onto the hot pan and let cook for a few minutes, until little bubbles form and the underside is golden.

Flip and cook another few minutes, until pancakes are cooked through.

Serve warm with pure maple syrup and fresh berries.

Makes about 20 pancakes.  Adapted from "Four-Grain Flapjacks" in The Joy of Cooking.

baby losing weight on alimentum | Mainx24 A Christmas Tradition

baby losing weight on alimentum

Mainx24 is a newer tradition for our family. Last year we participated in our first Firemans Breakfast and the Mainx24 Christmas Parade and we loved it, so this year I wanted to make sure we didnt miss out.

I knew that Saturday was going to be a busy day for us (Daniel had plans for an afternoon hike with friends) and his mom was also coming into town, but we still managed to squeeze in the breakfast and parade on a gorgeous December day.

We all slept in (a first!), but I managed to get everyone awake and out the door by 9:30am. We arrived at the fire station at 10am and had just enough time to eat breakfast and then walk outside to enjoy the parade.

This is the same timeline we followed last year and it was perfect for kids – no extra waiting in line for pancakes and the parade started right after breakfast was over.

While we ate our pancakes, someone played Christmas carols on a grand piano. The music was nice, but then a lady got up to accompany the piano. Jacks reaction sums it up, "That lady is yelling and it scares me." He proceeded to cover his ears for the duration of breakfast. To be fair, the singing probably wasnt as bad as it sounded, but the PA system was lousy and all together it was not working. So we gobbled up our pancakes and headed outside.

We found a good spot right outside of the fire station and then ran into a college friend. We love that even though Chattanooga is a city, it is still small enough to run into friends at local events!

We thought that Isaac would nap in the stroller, but he loved watching all of the floats and people walk by. Jack loved collecting all of the candy and now our candy dish is restocked and should last us until Easter.

My favorite part of parades are the marching bands. I always get a little choked up. I guess it just makes me feel nostalgic. Jack really liked the marching band too – even when they stopped right in front of us and banged loudly on the drums!

There was a man playing an organ directly behind where we were standing, so in addition to the parade, we were serenaded with Christmas music the entire time.

Other favorites included the Chattanooga Fire Cabaret and the Book Mobile (they pass out books to kids every year). I also adore all of the old jeeps and cars, and the VW Campers decorated for Christmas.

Im looking forward to next year! Mainx24 lasts for 24 hours on Main Street with many more activities. Hopefully we will be able to squeeze in a couple of other things next year in addition to the pancake breakfast and parade.

baby losing weight on breast milk | Isaac is Eight Months Old

baby losing weight on breast milk

The past month has been a busy one. Isaac celebrated his first Thanksgiving (getting to try a mini smorgasbord of different foods) as well as his baby dedication at our church, lots of Christmas celebrating and prep, and even his first trip to Gatlinburg.

I feel like it isnt possible, but Isaac keeps getting sweeter and sweeter. He grins at every single person we encounter and goes to anyone willingly – even a visit to Santa did not phase him.

A couple of weeks ago, we took both boys Christmas shopping and Daniel had a taste of my daily life. He pushed Isaac around in a stroller while Jack and I picked out a daddy gift and just about every stranger they passed stopped to say hi to Isaac.

He is definitely getting more interactive, especially in regards to his big brother. Anything that Jack does will illicit huge belly laughs from our littlest guy and he watches Jack with great interest. We regularly talk to Jack about the responsibility of being the big brother and how Isaac will always look up to him and want to do whatever he does.

It terms of interacting with Jack, our two boys are starting to have great fun together. Jack makes Isaac laugh and now they also like to hold hands in the car.

Bed times are interesting because Isaac wants to hold whatever book we are trying to read Jack. He also will grab Jacks hair or clothes (Jack is not a fan of this). I think they will enjoy playing together, but I also think Jack is in for a surprise regarding what it is like to have a little brother who can take all of your things!

This month was the first time Isaac actually played when we went to the Creative Discovery Museum (up until now he has been content to be in the Ergo or our stroller). Since he is good at sitting, I sat him on the ground and helped Jack build a tower out of blocks while Isaac kept busy on his own. I love that he is entering a more playful and curious stage.

Isaac still isnt moving a whole lot (Im not in a hurry to have a mobile baby!) but he has started to roll over and scoot backwards. While he may not be an early crawler or walker, he has great core stability and can sit and play on the floor for extended periods of time. He also loves his jumparoo – the jumparoo allows me to do things like cook dinner!

I have been a bit lazy when it comes to food and Isaac. Food is so messy and I just havent been ready to commit to the mess. He obviously isnt lacking from calories, so we just kind of do food at random intervals. I will have to get more consistent about this in the weeks and months to come. For now he has tried quite a bit of what we eat, but not a lot of quantity.

The week of Thanksgiving, Isaacs top two teeth came in. While trying to get a good look at the new teeth, we discovered that he had a pretty impressive lip tie. The week after Thanksgiving we were able to have a procedure done to correct it.

The pediatrician we saw said it was the worst one she had seen and was impressed that he has continued to nurse all of this time. The tie is now fixed and his top teeth are starting to move closer together (I will share more about this experience in a future post).

Isaac is finally big enough to sit in the cart when grocery shopping. This is going to save my back since lugging him around is getting to be more taxing due to his hefty size.

Our littlest man discovered that he can splash during bath time and he thinks this is a riot. We still bathe him on the counter in the kitchen, but he is starting to make too big of a mess. We will probably have to bite the bullet and go ahead and move him to the big tub soon. He has also started playing peek-a-boo with us. He will cover his face with a burp cloth and pull it off and laugh hysterically. If I cover my face with my hands he will pull the hands away and then push them back in front of my face again. In addition to peek-a-boo, he has entered the stage where he is fascinated with phones, remotes and cords. If I hide my phone under my leg he will search until he finds it. And he also like to try to "sing" along with us at church or with the radio in the car.

For about 10 days this month Isaac slept through the night (8 hours at a time), but since our recent trip for our anniversary, he is back to waking up at night. I am beyond ready to be sleeping normally again. At least I know that this phase wont last forever, and really the middle of the night moments when I get to see the moon and the brightest stars are some of the sweetest times (even if they make me cranky and tired the next day!

End of month stats:

Eye Color: We have two blue-eyed boys (to match their blue-eyed parents.

Hair Color: Blond for now. Jack started out blond and now has a sandy brown color.

Height: ?

Weight: A healthy 23 lbs (and wearing size 5 diapers)

Foods: We are introducing lots of different foods (pretty much whatever we eat). He really likes salmon, trout and even had a taste of a wild boar burger and liked it. Thankfully no allergies as of now.

Words: Lots of different sounds, but no actual words. He often makes a "da da" and "ma ma" sound, mostly when he wants something. His dominant sounds when he is happy is a "fa" and "dis" sound.

Movement: Finally rolling over with great consistency – I find him in his bed on his tummy (and rolled around in all sorts of directions). He will scoot backward and if he really wants something he is working hard to scoot forward. He sits with great stability and LOVES to jump in his jumparoo.

Teeth: His top two teeth came in this month and we think a pre molar is trying to come in. Four total for now (top and bottom).

*Update: I forgot to include that Isaac seemed to start waving intentionally this month. It is really sweet to watch him start to communicate in this manner.

*As with Jack, I will be posting monthly updates of Isaac on a quilt (inherited from my Grandma), next to a yellow Tonka truck (a toy from Daniels childhood).
Isaac at One Month  |  Isaac at Two Months  |  Isaac at Three Months  |  Isaac at Four Months  |  Isaac at Five Months  | Isaac at Six Months  |  Isaac at Seven Months

A Look Back:
Jack at One Month  |  Jack at Two Months  |  Jack at Three Months  |  Jack at Four Months  |  Jack at Five Months  |  Jack at Six Months  |  Jack at Seven Months  |  Jack at Eight

(We used a quilt from Daniels family for the Jack photos, along wit the Tonka truck from Daniels childhood).
